I will be in Kaanapali for my sons bithday. He wants to go out for sushi. Should I take him to Sansei or Cascades Grille, or do you have another suggestion?
Thanks
Sansei vs. Cascades Grille
Cascades doesn%26#39;t get good reviews. Sansei is not describd on their web site as a sushi restaurant but a sea food restaurant with a sushi bar. It is also described as sushi. If you are looking for Japanese sushi and not just raw fish at a bar at a sea food restaurant then I was referred to Hakone and also Hiroshi in Kihie. People like Sansei for the ';sushi'; but it isn%26#39;t Japanese sushi. It is raw fish.If your son is a sushi afficianado, he will want Hakone. If if is into new wave fusion fare he will want SanSei. I don%26#39;t think he will want Cascades either way.
Sansei vs. Cascades Grille
This is the web site for SanSei
http://www.sanseihawaii.com/
it is described as a sea food restaurant and sushi bar.
We have been going to SanSei for years and would highly recommend it. The have wonderful specialty rolls, sashshime (splg?) platters and award winning specialties. With it%26#39;s popularity be sure to make a reservation. People line up to get in when they open for an early bird special. I forget what the discount is if you order before 630pm. They do take out orders as well but only after 630pm
Never heard of Cascades Grille. I%26#39;ve been to Sansei (the one at Kapalua), don%26#39;t know why. I think it%26#39;s hugely overrated and really not very good. I suspect you may find the same, since I believe that you are from my neck of the woods, where good sushi is plentiful.
I don%26#39;t really have any sushi recs for Maui, never had great sushi on Maui.
Sansei has great sushi. In fact, in 25+ visits, I%26#39;ve never ordered an entree for dinner. They offer many new, modern, western type sushi creations. But, they also serve excellent traditional sushi.
Enjoy
This link is from chowhound. It si about SanSei. IT does describe SanSei is fusion and doesnt get great reviews. SanSei describes themselves on their own web site as fusion. Ask your son is he wants Japanese sushi or fusion. Here is the link.

ither way Cascades isn%26#39;t really suggested unless you are staying at the Hyatt and have no where else to go. For Japanese sushi, Hakone at the Maui Prince and Sushi Paradise in Kihei and also Hiroachi in Kihie.
Actually, I ate at Sensei last time I was in Maui. It was quite good. I had sushi, but no one else in my party did. They all said their dinner were great. They have quite the eclectic menu. Definitely fusion.
I%26#39;ve been to both Cascades and Sansei several times in the past. Cascades has reasonably good sushi and has an interesting ambiance in that it is an open air restaurant. Sansei has excellent food and very high quality fish, and is usually packed full, especially for the half price happy hour (before 6:00 if I%26#39;m not mistaken).
The previous posters are correct in that the %26#39;sushi%26#39; at Sansei could not be described as authentic Japanese and is better described as %26#39;fusion sushi%26#39; (though you can get traditional sushi there as well). I%26#39;m a long time sushi lover and it%26#39;s been very interesting to see the focus of creativity in sushi shift to Southern California and Hawaii. I personally love the new fusion sushi as much as the more tradtional sushi.
So to answer your question, I would go to Sansei. Though one reason to choose Cascades would be that it is in Kaanapali whereas Sansei will be a 15-20 minute drive.
Enjoy whatever you decide to do!
