whale watching on kauai

we will be in Kauai in Feb. staying at the Islander (east). We have an ocean front. Do you think we will be able to see whales from our balcony? If not, can anybody recommend a good place to hang out and see whales elsewhere?

We will also be on the island in Feb. We stay on the south shore and just sit on our lanai and watch them - seems like the best time for us to see them are around 9 a.m. and again around 3. But really they breach and flap all day. I really can%26#39;t answer if you will see them from the East shore but it is a big ocean and I would think they are everywhere LOL. I am sure you can spot them from the Hyatt, even spouting horn. Why not take a boat trip?

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

If you are going to be on the East Side - a couple of good places to watch for whales is the area around Kealia Beach - to the North of Kapa%26#39;a -- there is a turnout on the highway that overlooks the coastline there and gives you a really nice panoramic view -- the other place is Ahukini Harbor -- just outside the Lihu%26#39;e Airport -- you take the road that goes by the helicopter pads and keep on it until you come to the jetty and pier area at Ahukini -- this is one of the places where they conduct whale counts from -- so it is also a pretty good place to see them from -- you can see up and down the coast there a pretty good distance.

Anyplace that gives you a good panoramic view of the ocean will be a good place to watch for whales.

thanks guys! I%26#39;d love to take a boat trip, but don%26#39;t think I could take it. (seasick). I am taking a cruise in January, and I just ordered a Travelmate wrist band, and I%26#39;ve got ginger pills. I tried a Bonine the other night, and it knocked me out for the whole next day. That%26#39;s no fun! So I%26#39;ll see how I do on the cruise, and then who knows? I am going to try the helicopter though, and I%26#39;m praying I won%26#39;t get sick!

We will have a car though and will spend a lot of time driving around the island, so if you can think of any other good places to watch from, like a nice bar or restaurant anywhere, let me know, okay?

How about Kilauea lighthouse? We were there too late in the season, but it is sure panoramic.

Seeing albatrosses and frigate birds close up was quite a thrill.

Very likely you will see whales from your balcony at the Islander...take your binoculars. I saw plenty of action from an east side lanai during January stays and even into April over a number of years.

During your stay you can go to any of the 15 sites used for the official whale count for some guarantee of sightings. (';Sanctuary Ocean Count 2008'; on 1/16, 2/23 and 3/29).

1. Lumahai Overlook (north side)

2. Princeville Hotel (north side)

3. Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (north side)

4. Crater Hill (KPNWR) (north side)

5. Kapa%26#39;a Lookout (Kealia)

6. Ahukini State Recreational Pier (about 2 mi. south of the airport)

7. Ninini Lighthouse (entrance from ocean to Nawiliwili Harbor)

8. Mahaulepu-Haula (south side)

9. Mahaulepu-Makawehi (south side)

10. Makaheuna Point (south side)

11. Poipu Beach Park (south side)

12. Kaiwa Point (south side)

13. Port Allen Cemetery (south side)

14. Waimea Canyon Drive (west side)

15. Pacific Missile Firing Range - Nohili Ditch (west side)

correction: whale count on 1/26 (not 16).

wow. that%26#39;s some great info. thanks

We have our pharmacist mix up sopalamine, the same thing that is in dermascope motion sickness patches in a syringe. It was something our doctor recommended. It doesn%26#39;t require a needle by the way. A very small amount, about the size of a pin head behind the ear evry 2 or three days works great for us. If we hit some rough seas I may put some on a couple of days in a row if necessary. We are both very prone to sea sickness and have never had a problem going this route. I have even used this for amusement park so that I can ride some stuff I don%26#39;t normally get to ride. It works better than the patches because you can regulate how much you use. The patches are the same amount for a 100 pound or 300 pound person and made us both very drowsy. We started cutting patches in half until we heard that it wasn%26#39;t recommended by the manufacturer becaust the coverage on the patch can vary. Good luck on your trip, We will be in Hawaii in February also. We are on the Princess cruise.

great suggestions on where to watch from the shore. thanks. can anyone recommend a boat tour company? is poipu a good place to sail from? if not, what%26#39;s best?

I get seasick in a bathtub (:-) and I use the patch by perscription. The first time I used it I was dizzy and felt sick the first day. Then a friend said cut it in 1/2. A miracle. Put the patch on the night before you do a boat trip and in the morning you%26#39;ll be fine. Ginger pills just aren%26#39;t strong enough for me.

I know bare boat sail all over the world.
