Measles Outbreak Grows, May Have Spread At Airport

An 11-month-old baby who was treated at the Children%26#39;s Clinic in La Jolla before traveling to Hawaii has contracted measles, prompting San Diego County health officials today to warn air passengers they may have been exposed to the disease.

It is the fifth confirmed case of measles stemming from an outbreak of the disease locally, according to officials with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.

Health officials suspect that another five people -- including a 10-month-old infant hospitalized yesterday and a 2-year-old toddler -- are also infected with measles.

The 11-month-old infant is believed to have acquired the disease at Children%26#39;s Clinic, where the first measles patient received care on Jan. 25, according to the HHSA.

The five pending measles cases are also believed to have been contracted at the Children%26#39;s Clinic, according to health officials, who are calling it the county%26#39;s first outbreak of measles in children in 17 years.

The baby traveled with family members to Hawaii on Saturday and is now in isolation at a military base until there is no further risk of the disease spreading, according to the HHSA.

Officials with the Hawaii Department of Health are working to notify passengers on Hawaiian Airlines Flight 15, which departed Lindbergh Field%26#39;s Terminal 2 on Saturday morning bound for Honolulu.

';It is extremely important that passengers, particularly children, in close proximity to this area of the airport around that time (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) are aware that they may have been exposed to the disease,'; said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county%26#39;s public health officer.

I am going to assume that if you or your children have been immunized OR have already had the Measles, it should not be a worry. Most children who are in school, have probably been immunized. I know some slip through the cracks and/or aren%26#39;t immunized properly due to beliefs. Older adults, such as myself(58) didn%26#39;t ever have the immunization because it didn%26#39;t exist. But we usually got the Measles and then we were protected from getting them again.

I%26#39;m not sure of the age at which children are being immunized these days with the Measles vaccine, but I would think definitely by 2 y/o.

Wondering why it wasn%26#39;t made clear that if you have already had Measles or been given the vaccine, there is no need to panic?

I agree it isn%26#39;t a problem for most people, I just wanted to give a heads up.

Children are immunized at 12 months old.

Vast majority of adults born before 1960 had measles as a child (vaccine came out in 1962).

Children now get a booster later in childhood that should protect them long term.

The few cases of measles seen in the country per year are in infants not immunized, immigrants, and the rare adult whose single vaccine as a child has lost its effectiveness.

Distance from Pearl Harbor to Sea Life Park

My husband and I are planning to visit Pearl Harbor and Sea Life Park (only to swim with dolphins) in one day as we are flying in from Maui. Does anyone know how far Pearl Harbor is from Sea Life Park? If we go on a Saturday, how is traffic on the road from Pearl Harbor to Sea Life? Thank you for your comments.

Distance from Pearl Harbor to Sea Life Park

It is about 40 minutes from USS Arizona.

Traffic will not be bad if you take H-3.

To get to H-3 from USS Arizona Memorial parking lot:

Make a left onto Kamehameha Highway. Get into the far right lane right away.

Turn right onto Salt Lake Blvd. You will want to follow Salt Lake Blvd around to the right. There will be a McDonald%26#39;s on the right. Get into the left lane %26amp; turn left (Kahuapaani St.) at the stoplight at the end of Aloha Stadium parking lot.

Go through the first stoplight %26amp; get into the right lane. Take the Honolulu exit. Stay in the far right lane %26amp; take the H-3 exit. H-3 exit will be in about 1/4 mile.

The entire distance from Arizona Memorial parking lot to H-3 exit is only about 3/4 mile. So these turns will come up pretty fast.

In Kaneohe:

Take the 2nd Kaneohe exit (Kamehameha Highway (83)) to the right.

Go about 1/2 mile. Take Pali Highway (61) to the left toward Kailua.

In about 2-3 miles, turn right onto Kalanianole Highway (72).

That will take you to Sea Life Park.

To return to the airport, you can take Pali Highway (61) or Likelike Highway (63) across the mountain back to Honolulu.

Or if you have time, continue around on Kalanianaole Highway %26amp; stop at places like Halona Blowhole. Its not far from Sea Life Park. Take it back to Honolulu. It will become H-1.

First time to Maui

We are planning a family trip to Maui and are using the book Maui Revealed to plan.

I would like some input on our plan:

1) Stay 2 nights in south Maui at beach ect., travel northwest sightseeing along the coast line to north Maui;

2) Stay in North Maui for three nights, more beach stuff and seeing the sights around there;

3) Take to road to Hana and stay there three nights, taking in the points of interest;

4) Finishing up with sightseeing along the road south towards our starting location in South Maui

Does this plan sound do-able?

First time to Maui

Frankly, it sounds like a lot of driving to me. Plus, you will lose up to half a day to move from one place to another (pack, check out, travel, check in, etc.). I%26#39;d recommend finding one place to stay for the whole time and then let some of your plan unfold as you are there. It seems that whenever we go to Hawaii we always wish we would%26#39;ve had one more day to do nothing but enjoy the beach/pool/relax. We%26#39;ve never left thinking that there was one site that we should%26#39;ve seen.

if you are going to insist on changing locations i would stay at no more then 2 places

A different perspective...

We stayed a week on our first trip to Maui and spent 4 days in Lahaina, 2 in Hana and 2 in Wailea.

On our second trip we spent 10 days total on Maui and spent 5 in Napili, 2 in Hana and 3 in Wailea.

This year we are staying 9 nights in West Maui.

I never had a problem moving around the island every 3-4 days. We actually preferred it. If that is the kind of traveler that you are, then go for it. It certainly isn%26#39;t for everyone though.

I am curious why you would stay in North Maui for 3 days instead of West Maui? In my opinion North Maui is the least pleasureable part of the island and I couldn%26#39;t think of things to do up there for 3 days, but I may be uninformed as well. The weather never seemed as nice up there either.

Maui is a very small island. You can drive from the east side (airport) to the west side (North Kihei or Maalea) in 30 minutes. It%26#39;s about two hours max from Wailea (South Maui) to Kapalua (West Maui). It is easier to get to Haleakala and Road to Hana from South Maui.

I%26#39;d pick a spot in either South or West Maui for the bulk of the trip and spend no more than two nights in Hana.

You begin the Road to Hana near the airport (Kahului)and must return via the same road. You might plan to do this at the end of your trip, in order to be near the airport the day you depart.

I agree that you will be doing a lot of packing and unpacking. Find a spot you like and stay there or you may choose to do a night or two in Hana but that would be it. Wailea to Kaanapali is really only about a one hour drive and I would recommend staying in Wailea if that fits the budget. The other thing you will get stuck doing is waiting for check in times as most places will want you to check out by 11am and you will have to find something to do until 3 or 4pm when you can check in to the next spot.

Pick only one part of the Island...TA is great for area%26#39;s that fit your likes...there are only a few area%26#39;s that are more than a 1 or 2 hour drive from ANYWHERE! HA..Hana is a long day(plan a full day) but I advise finding a home base and not wasting days and days moving about! You are looking at a short vacation...don%26#39;t waste it!

The Maui revealed book is great, but very unpopular with the locals. The book shows you beauitful pictures of Blue Pool off the Hana Hawaii. We went there and it was the highlight of our trip.

Since then it has become a nightmare, you may run into a angry hawaiian named frank at the end of the road, who does not want you there. I heard a rumor he has thrown coconuts and even punched a tourist in the face. It is a shame, because this place is truley paradise, but show some aloha and avoid this one.

Changing plans. Will stay is one spot. Looking at Kaanaplai, Wailea, or South Kihei? Which is best for hanging out on beach %26amp; sightseeing with 12 %26amp; 14 kids. Still would like to spend one or two nights in Hana? Also is Trilogy daytrip for snorkeling worth the money? My kids have never been on a sailboat or snorkeled. Thanks again!

What time do the shops close in the Poipu Shopping Village, Coconut Marketplace, the shops in Hanalei, and the vendors at Spouting Horn?

I figured we%26#39;d hit the different shops after the beach, but wasn%26#39;t sure what time they closed.

Aloha Bunecca! I wish I could give you specifics . . . I just know that we eat dinner after sunset and usually wander around shops after that when we are in Hanalei, and many of the shops are still open.

I just want to wish you a wonderful trip - we%26#39;ll be looking forward to that trip report when you return! :)

The vendors at Spouting Horn are closed up by right around 5pm -- the shops in the Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village stay open until 9 I believe - same with Coconut Marketplace (again, I believe) - not sure about Hanalei. Some stores might close earlier on Sundays.

It varies in Hanalei town. Some shops like Sand people stay open until 9. Smaller shops close depending on the surf conditions.

Na Pali boat tour in 1 week

I have been reading lots of posts about the options for a Na Pali boat tour in February and I am still confused. I really want to see the Na Pali coast via boat, but I realize February is not the best time to do this. I leave this weekend and I am not sure if I should book ahead of time or wait until I get there to check out the weather. Also, after reading so many reviews, I am confused which company to pick.

Most of the boats will be going out of Port Allen on the West Shore this time of year, hopefully someone else who either lives there or visits this time can help more, we usually go in the fall.

Yes, wait until you get there, you will not have to worry about getting a tour.

We went on Liko tours out of Port Allen (April 06)They did a really great job. The scenery was spectacular, no they did not go all the way up the coast, but we did not know the difference, it was beautiful to us.

Plus they were very friendly and knowledgable. We would go with them again.

Book after you get on island, especially during our winter swell months.

There are going to be surf warnings posted soon for

large north shore swells with wave faces 15-20 feet.

But, do check out the conditions and also ask before booking with any of the boat tour companies.

Probably a good idea to book on a larger vessel this time of year. And those boats will be going out of the west side.

Capt, Andy, Blue Dolphin, Holo Holo, and Liko would be some of the Napali Tour outfits to consider.

If you are the least bit prone to seasickness, take some remedies like dramamine BEFORE the trip. Once the train leaves the station, so to speak, it is too late to stop the seasickness. The last ride I went on in the calmer autumn months rendered 10% of the passengers heaving over the rails. I don%26#39;t want to scare you, just be prepared so you don%26#39;t ruin an expensive and breathtakingly beautiful trip.

I ditto that. So many visitors on our boat were sick. I heard them talking that they were used to being on boats back home-well that experience may be a lake in Indiana!

The weather can turn at anytime, so it is best to be prepared, even if you think you will not have an issue. Try the seabands if you do not want to take dramamine. How awful to be sick and miss the beauty of Napali

First time to Maui, looking for Condo on the beach

I have been reading the boards and have gleaned so much information from everyone here.

We are planning on traveling to Hawaii this year with a 6 and 2 year old. I am looking for a condo on the beach where my family can play and close to areas of fun.

I am overwhelmed with information right now. I have been looking at Koa Lagoon or Hale Kamaole. Any information out there on either of these would be greatly appreciated. And information on other sites would be wonderful!

I am looking for a 2 bedroom with a kitchen, lanai and beach view.

You can get aerial views of all of the facilities on Maui. You can also get reviews, though I%26#39;m not certain that the publishers aren%26#39;t more than a little biased.

Of those two I%26#39;d certainly choose Hale Kamaole. Koa Lagoon is in North Kihei; you%26#39;d have to drive to a good beach.

I first read your post as wanting a beachfront condo, but then you mentioned beach view.

If you want beachfront in Kihei on a good swimming beach, look at Hale Pau Hana, Kihei Surfside, Mana Kai Maui. Sugar Beach in North Kihei has the only good beach in that area, but is a bit isolated.

There is a whole string of condos with 2 BRs along Kihei Road, across from the Kam I, II and III beach parks. Mana Kai Maui is right on Keawakapu beach and Kiehi Surfside is next door. This is one of the best beaches for children. Across Kihei Road but near both Kam III and Keawakapu are Maui Hill, Maui Kamaole and...Hale Kamaole.

Wow, thank you everyone. There is just so much information I am afraid of getting the wrong place. I have two children that are going to want to be in the water, alot! What is a good beach to just hang at.

The Kamaole Beach Parks have not only good beaches, but shade trees, grassy areas with picnic benches, restrooms, showers, lifeguards, volleyball nets. A %26#39;cheap date%26#39; is to fetch some fastfood from across Kihei Road -- or bring food with you from your condo -- and picnic there. Can%26#39;t beat the view! The parks are popular with visitors and locals alike.

Keawakapu is in front of the Mana Kai Maui and is the northernmost part of the whole long stretch of Wailea beaches that extend south past the Wailea resort condos and hotels.

All beaches in Hawaii are public. There is parking at most, although somewhat limited through Wailea.

Your oldest would probably really like the Maui Aquarium. It%26#39;s pretty nice. I%26#39;m trying to remember how much admission is. It%26#39;s been about 3 1/2 years since we went to it. I want to say it was around $20-$25 per adult, and am completely drawing a blank on children%26#39;s prices.

Maui Ocean Center is a must! Also - it%26#39;s fun for the kids to feed the Koi fish at the Maui Prince which is 5 minutes from Wailea. The sugar train in Lahaina. I%26#39;d get a bunch of cheap beach/pool toys at Kmart, Wal-Mart, or Longs and let them have fun with that. On Wednesday evenings there is a hula show at the Shops at Wailea which they might like too. There%26#39;s a bowling alley in Kahalui and an indoor amusement park.
