Safety Deposit box or Safe.

We are staying for the first time in 2 VRBO condos. Since we have always stayed at Hotels, we have always had either a safe in the room or a Box at the Front Desk. What do you do with your valuables when your staying in a condo? Are we supposed to use our imagination and come up with something genious, that no thief would have the brains to figure out?

Thanks,

Bellini

Safety Deposit box or Safe.

We stayed in condos in maui, they have all had a safe in the room. I would imagine most do.

Safety Deposit box or Safe.

We%26#39;ve always stayed in condos on Maui and only a few of them had a safe. In addition we don%26#39;t always have maid service so someone entering the condo isn%26#39;t a concern. I don%26#39;t travel with my expensive jewelry so I don%26#39;t have to worry about it. But if we are going out and leaving our expensive camera equipment in the condo, we lock it in our luggage and stow it in the closet. We do the same thing whenever we stay in hotels that don%26#39;t have safes.

Here%26#39;s one thing that we never though of until last year...

You may want to ask if the condo you are renting is being sold. We rented through an owner last time and they neglected to tell us that it was for sale. We were surprised (and pretty ticked off) one day when we came back from the beach and there were people in it! We did have things of value in the condo that were not hidden. No one notified us that a real estate agent would be showing it.

our condo has a safe same as you find on the cruiselines

we try bring a minimal amount of expensive stuff with us as to cut our losses if something happens

you could get imaginative -- try the vacuum cleaner--there are fake cans of food that you can store some small things in

trust me there are no places that a thief has not thought of looking - you just have to make it as difficult as possible so they leave without finding the good stuff --- they are on a time line to get in and out so do your best

When there is no safe, you%26#39;ve just got to be creative. First, dont bring anything valuable with you in the first place. Leave your diamonds at home in the safety deposit box. Of course you will have cash and credit cards, which are small and easy to hide somewhere in the condo. Between stacked plates in the kitchen, between bath towels, behind a picture on the wall.......

If you have an expensive camera, on days that you don%26#39;t take it with you, you will have to leave it

in the room somewhere. In the vacuum, maybe?

All the condos where we own have safes. Maybe yours does -- ask! I don%26#39;t bring expensive stuff or a lot of cash with me anyway. Maui is such a casual place.

I%26#39;m glad you are thinking about this though. I%26#39;m forever reminding people to lock their sliders and not think that because they are several floors up it%26#39;s OK to leave the sliders open at night. Thieves can climb! Also, don%26#39;t leave your laptop or camera on a lanai table or poolside. Wish I could list all the %26#39;thefts reported%26#39; from the Maui News -- some every day from the Kam beaches -- and supermarkets, just like at home!

Maui is a paradise, not Paradise itself.

Thanks for your ideas. I am not going to bring expensive jewellery. I am concerned about passports and travel documents though. I know this is the U.S. and not a 3rd World Country where people pay a lot for a passport, but I still like to have those items in a secure place. I used to always bring travellers cheques, but now I just bring more cash and bank cards. That is what I am going to have to hide. Thanks again for some of your ideas. I feel confident now that we will figure something out. We decided not to bring the Lap Top. Our camera is a few years old, so no big loss if something happens.

If you take your passport, copy your passport number and date of expiration and keep it at home to avoid further delays. You can then start the process to recover.

I always brought my laptop on visits here. You can get a good cable lock and lock it to the bedframe or other unbreakable, non-removable items. At least it keeps the honest people honest. I just never left it out in plain view when not in the room.

You would do well to make photocopies of your passport(s) license(s)and keep the copies separate from the actual documents. You might want to leave copies at home, too. We do this whenever we travel.

Maui Beaches - HELP!

Hi, I%26#39;m planning a possible trip to Maui late April/early May. I%26#39;ve never been to Hawaii, and all the different beaches and areas within Maui are incredibly overwhelming.

To help others give recommendations, here%26#39;s a rundown: I%26#39;m 25 and will be traveling with my boyfriend. I%26#39;m interested in nice beaches, snorkeling, whale watching, and a little shopping. He loves to play golf. My main concern is I really don%26#39;t want to be somewhere that is over crowded and having to fight to find a place on the beach and REALLY don%26#39;t want to be surrounded by kids. Hopefully if we go late April/early May we can avoid that problem.

Many of the pictures I%26#39;ve seen on tripadvisor make Maui seem like a tropical Disney. I thought Maui was more for adults and less kid friendly? Or maybe this is just the wrong place for me to go? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Maui Beaches - HELP!

What%26#39;s your price range? If you want great golf resorts - you may want the Kapalua or Wailea hotels or condos - condos will probably be quieter than hotels. You are probably going to miss the whales - they head out of the Hawaiian waters at the end of March usually.

Maui Beaches - HELP!

I would suggest the Napili area on the northwest side. There is golf in Napili and the surrounding areas.

Also, there is great snorkeling at Napili Bay and 3 other areas 5 minutes drive away. One of the top 10 beaches in the country is a 5 minute drive.

You will find the best deals at condos in the area. www.napili.com has condo/car rental deals for surprisingly cheap. All condos are on the ocean with an amazing view. We stay every year.

Most whale watching tours are out of Lahaina or even further, but Lahaina is only a 15-20 minute drive.

Hi tmliscano. I hope you enjoy Maui, it truly is beautiful. True there can be lots of kids at some areas, (Maui is incredibly kid-friendly - people with kids are at an advantage almost) but most of the beaches are big enough to spread out and find a quiet spot. There are some exceptions, like Kapalua Beach, which can get quite crowded on the weekends, and certain popular areas of Kaanapali (like Black Rock in front of the Sheraton). I%26#39;m not sure what type of snorkeling you like to do, but keep in mind that sand beaches = poor visibility. The best snorkeling areas are in coves lined with rock, not sand, or out to sea a few hundred yards beyond the silt zone. One of the top snorkel destinations is Honolua Bay, but only on calmer days - it%26#39;s a major surf spot when the swell is up. No sand - just rocks. It%26#39;s a bit of a drive and you need to hike in a bit from the road through a lovely rainforest, but it%26#39;s spectacular for snorkeling. My vote for the best combo of sandy beach plus good snorkeling are Napili Bay (north Maui) or Ulua (south Maui). There are always more kids on the weekends, because Maui families like to hit the beach just like visitors do! Don%26#39;t stress, you%26#39;ll love it --

We stayed at the Sheraton on Kaanapali and loved it- and we%26#39;re not big fans of kids either.

The only Disneyish place is the Grand Wailea because of its swimming pool with slides and water elevator. I would avoid that place if you want to avoid kids and crowds. I would also recommend a condo rental to avoid crowds around the swimming pool and fighting for a chair/chaise. Stay somewhere near Kaanapali or Wailea if you want great beaches with a lot of area to spread out. We%26#39;ll be on Maui in early May with our kids but the summer, Christmas and Spring break are the dates when the most kids will be around. You will likely see a few families with babies and toddlers and fewer school aged kids during your stay. Favorite beach down south is Maluaka, up north would be Kapalua.

Thank you all for your input!! I%26#39;ll be sure to refer back to them later.

As far as Grand Wailea, there%26#39;s an adults only pool, correct? I would be able to get good rate there and am leaning towards it. The place seems massive and great for families, but very nice nonetheless. I%26#39;m hoping that the time of year we%26#39;re going we can avoid the masses.

I have stayed at the 4Seasons next to the Grand Wailea and when walking by the Grand Wailea I tought that I never would like to stay there. The hotel itself looked huge and impersonal and the pool area seemed to be crowded by screaming kids and teenagers.

So if you are looking for a romantic holiday I would not recommend staying there - better choose the 4Seasons.

And by the way...at the 4 Seasons all cabanas and chairs as well as the umbrellas are for free - we always got a nice spot even when arriving at about 11am.

We have stayed at the Grand Wailea Resort many times. The hotel grounds are gorgeous and the location on Wailea Beach could not be better. I really like the resort. Late April / early May is ';off season'; so the crowds will be less. The adult pool is wonderful and quite isolated from the activity pools. Enjoy!

I am staying at the Grand Wailea soon and have heard you have to pay and reserve beach space.  If you do not do this, there is limited space. Is this true?  Is it going to be a hassle just to find a nice chaise lounge on the beach to enjoy?

Vegetarian Options in Kona?

We%26#39;ll be in Kona for 6 days at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort %26amp; Spa.

Can anyone recommend good vegetarian options in the area? We%26#39;re not vegan or interested in typical bland vegetarian meals. We%26#39;re interested in good meals -- they don%26#39;t necessarily have to be at fancy restaurants, the food just has to be good!

Thanks!

Vegetarian Options in Kona?

You are up in S. Koahala, about 45-60 minutes from Kailua-Kona. So that is a long drive for dinner. Gallery Restaurant in Mauna Lani Resort is good Cantonese and has vegetarian dishes.

Vegetarian Options in Kona?

that diet is totaly not here....and in the resorts totaly not there....there will be one item in each restauraunt of a vegi nature...and itwill only be there because they feel they have to........bland and marginal at best........Hawaii is a pork.beef.fish place.

nearest options will be O%26#39;s in Kona a 2 hr drive rt

Well, the main staple here is two scoops rice, one scoop mac salad and some kind of (greasy) meat alongside, so this is not a paradise for vegans/vegetarians. Kona Healthways has a small cafe inside and you can get take-out there too.

There%26#39;s some confusion here, as you can see.

You will NOT be in Kona, according to where you%26#39;re staying, but you might be planning on spending your time in the Kona area, we can%26#39;t tell from your post.

Waikoloa is not Kona.

So does knowing that change your question?

Local style restaurants do not at all cater to vegetarians. If you don%26#39;t eat fish or meat you%26#39;re stuck with side dishes, salads.

Pizza places -- will give you options.

Thai food should give you options.

Mexican food, typical options.

Most hotel/resort ';fancy'; restaurants will offer a vegetarian entree or two, and I think they%26#39;re actually you%26#39;re only option for getting something ';interesting.';

What would be a typical dish you%26#39;d like to see? (name a few and that would help)

When you are in Kona, Kona Brewing Company has really great salads and vegetarian Pizza options. Their menu is online so you can check it out. Nice outdoor(no view) seating area.

to reiterate...there is nothing on this whole island that even marginal...suggest you stay in your condo and dook, as the diet here is the total oppsite.

If the food is even marginal...count your blessings

The health food stores usually have great sandwiches that are very vegie. In our area, Anuenue Natural Foods in Ocean View is an absolutely great place for a ready made vegie sandwich. Much of the produce they use is local. You can be in and out of there in 5 minutes with a healthy alternative. In Kona, the health food store by Safeway is a good option. Hilo has Natural Foods (?) by Borders and they do a lot of other stuff including hot foods. What I have had there has been good. I had something at the health food store on Front Street and it was good too. These places almost always keep it fresh made daily

Almost forgot, was in Kona and ate at Sue%26#39;s Thai Kitchen. It was good. A very large vegie menu. Almost everything they make can be vegie.

all these suggestions....are nice but all the places from healthfood take out to Thai etc...are all an hours drive from your hotel

Dan%26#39;s right -- ';in the area'; I would go to Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae and try the Thai restaurant in Queen%26#39;s Restaurant.

I think Merriman%26#39;s Market Cafe right there at the King%26#39;s Shops has to be your best option for a really good meal. I think they ought to be able to come up with something yummy, as it is a second restaurant for one of the most innovative chefs on the island (not his main venue, which is in Waimea).

Also stop by Roys in King Shops ... even though fish and meat will be center stage, no doubt they do offer a vegetarian entree. This is getting into the fine dining league.

Also for fine dining, the Hilton%26#39;s Donatoni. I%26#39;ve never been to an Italian restaurant where they didn%26#39;t offer a veggie pasta.

Trip report 2/11-2/15

Day 1

Well, I%26#39;m still a little fuzzy-brained, but I will do my best to re-live -- uh, I mean recap my time in kauai.

After four nights in Oahu (Hilton Hawaiian Village, ProBowl - fun time!) we were off to Kauai. Flight short and sweet. Arrived and got to Alamo to rent our convertible. No hassle, no wait. However, as I read online, they will try to get you to pay for the second driver even if your contract says no charge, so make sure you have your paperwork with you. Once they saw it, it was no problem. Out we went on a beautiful sunshiny day in our Mustang convertible. Whee! (note - all the convertibles we saw were kind of a little banged up looking, nothing serious, just not perfect looking - no biggie).

We drove the 10 or so minutes to the Islander on the Beach, checked in to our unit in the Ni%26#39;ihau ? building right on the water. Very, very lovely view of the water. Nice private balcony. Nice enough place if you%26#39;re not too picky about the little things (like pidgeon poop on your balcony, dusty air-conditioner vents, an occasional bug).

We rented through a private owner and were very happy with our $129 a night rate for this prime spot in a great location. This unit is on the top (3rd) floor, so the view is fab, but there are no elevators. So if carrying luggage up three flights is a problem for you, you would do very well with a ground floor unit. Some of the other buildings on the property don%26#39;t have the direct ocean view, but the grounds are beautiful and very well kept, so I think just about any view from any building would be a good one.

I had read that these units are very tiny, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be more than adequate for the two of us. Just don%26#39;t be expecting a condo with a kitchen. It%26#39;s really like a hotel room, but definitely not cramped at all. There is a microwave, sink, and little fridge (no freezer section though).

There was also a nice CD player, so I%26#39;m glad we brought along some Iz to listen to. We also bought more CD%26#39;s at the stand in the marketplace. The pool/bar/hot tub area is very relaxing. All in all, we were very pleased with our stay at the Islander. (one bad note though. We did one load of wash, and the clothes came out with black marks all over them. Luckily, it was mostly just underwear! Beware of the dryers there!)

Walked around the Coconut Marketplace a little, then off to Foodland for supplies (get the card - it%26#39;s quick and will save you a few bucks). Back to the Islander to chill at the pool for a while. Then it%26#39;s a shower and a nap before dinner - only we don%26#39;t wake up till the sun comes up the next day!!

Day 2 next...

Trip report 2/11-2/15

Thanks Suzy, very interested in any other comments about the Islander nearby restaurants etc. as we will be staying there in June

Trip report 2/11-2/15

Thanks for the report! Do you have a link to the private owner%26#39;s site?

Eastco:

As far as restaurants in the immediate area, I can recommend two places. Eggberts for breakfast (in the Coconut Marketplace) and the Hukilau Lanai for a nice dinner (at the Kauai Coast Resort next door).

Mauna Kea condo vs. Kohala Ranch home

We are planning a trip to the big Island in April. We are contemplating on staying at a condo: The Ridge at Waiulaula at Mauna Kea vs. a beautiful home on the Kohala Ranch. What do you think? What is the construction like at the Mauna Kea now? Is it loud?

Thanks

Mauna Kea condo vs. Kohala Ranch home

I would stay at the Mauna Kea. You will be in a resort environment and you can use the shuttle to go over to the Prince if you want to. Kohala Ranch is more isolated and higher elevation too.

Mauna Kea condo vs. Kohala Ranch home

Kohala Ranch has beautiful homes but is also a dry dusty area except for the top, which is colder. It goes all the way from near sea level to near 3000 feet elevation, so I would need an address to guess at the climate there.

I was told the construction at Mauna Kea would be quite loud, by the people who work there, but I haven%26#39;t heard it for myself, nor do I know how close the condo would be. Waiulaula area is north of the hotel, and it%26#39;s the southern part of the hotel that was damaged.

Are they the same price, and do they both have their own pools?

I wouldn%26#39;t stay at Kohala Ranch without a pool, BUT be aware that unheated pools are frigid ... so if a pool is part of the attraction, find out what temp it%26#39;s kept at.

Kohala Ranch is quite remote, you would have to drive downhill to the highway then south to get to a beach. SO if being near the wate ris important, not the place. Good high-elevation views of the water, true.

Don;t know about the construction at Mauna Kea. But surely there are other condos in your price range at Mauna Lani, for example. The high end ones are walking sitance to the beaches there. Or Kolea at Waikoloa.

where to post trip report?

Hey guys I%26#39;m back ! Just got in tonight, will have lots to say but want to know where to post it. Could be book length...lol

Some excursions we did included Hyatt star gazing tour, Kapulua zipline adventue,Paragon Lanai snorkel %26amp; sail, and Paragon sunset cruise.

Sue

where to post trip report?

If you went to Maui post on the Maui forum.

where to post trip report?

Thanks pzp- I was referring to maui but thought there might be a seperate trip report format. Guess not eh? lol

Sue

No specific format. I seem to see three main types of report.

Day by day report (including how they got there/rental car info/where they stayed)

Lists of activity reviews, restaurant reviews, beach reviews, etc.

Pros %26amp; cons of what they experienced.
