Safety Deposit box or Safe.

We are staying for the first time in 2 VRBO condos. Since we have always stayed at Hotels, we have always had either a safe in the room or a Box at the Front Desk. What do you do with your valuables when your staying in a condo? Are we supposed to use our imagination and come up with something genious, that no thief would have the brains to figure out?

Thanks,

Bellini

We stayed in condos in maui, they have all had a safe in the room. I would imagine most do.

Safety Deposit box or Safe.

We%26#39;ve always stayed in condos on Maui and only a few of them had a safe. In addition we don%26#39;t always have maid service so someone entering the condo isn%26#39;t a concern. I don%26#39;t travel with my expensive jewelry so I don%26#39;t have to worry about it. But if we are going out and leaving our expensive camera equipment in the condo, we lock it in our luggage and stow it in the closet. We do the same thing whenever we stay in hotels that don%26#39;t have safes.

Here%26#39;s one thing that we never though of until last year...

You may want to ask if the condo you are renting is being sold. We rented through an owner last time and they neglected to tell us that it was for sale. We were surprised (and pretty ticked off) one day when we came back from the beach and there were people in it! We did have things of value in the condo that were not hidden. No one notified us that a real estate agent would be showing it.

our condo has a safe same as you find on the cruiselines

we try bring a minimal amount of expensive stuff with us as to cut our losses if something happens

you could get imaginative -- try the vacuum cleaner--there are fake cans of food that you can store some small things in

trust me there are no places that a thief has not thought of looking - you just have to make it as difficult as possible so they leave without finding the good stuff --- they are on a time line to get in and out so do your best

When there is no safe, you%26#39;ve just got to be creative. First, dont bring anything valuable with you in the first place. Leave your diamonds at home in the safety deposit box. Of course you will have cash and credit cards, which are small and easy to hide somewhere in the condo. Between stacked plates in the kitchen, between bath towels, behind a picture on the wall.......

If you have an expensive camera, on days that you don%26#39;t take it with you, you will have to leave it

in the room somewhere. In the vacuum, maybe?

All the condos where we own have safes. Maybe yours does -- ask! I don%26#39;t bring expensive stuff or a lot of cash with me anyway. Maui is such a casual place.

I%26#39;m glad you are thinking about this though. I%26#39;m forever reminding people to lock their sliders and not think that because they are several floors up it%26#39;s OK to leave the sliders open at night. Thieves can climb! Also, don%26#39;t leave your laptop or camera on a lanai table or poolside. Wish I could list all the %26#39;thefts reported%26#39; from the Maui News -- some every day from the Kam beaches -- and supermarkets, just like at home!

Maui is a paradise, not Paradise itself.

Thanks for your ideas. I am not going to bring expensive jewellery. I am concerned about passports and travel documents though. I know this is the U.S. and not a 3rd World Country where people pay a lot for a passport, but I still like to have those items in a secure place. I used to always bring travellers cheques, but now I just bring more cash and bank cards. That is what I am going to have to hide. Thanks again for some of your ideas. I feel confident now that we will figure something out. We decided not to bring the Lap Top. Our camera is a few years old, so no big loss if something happens.

If you take your passport, copy your passport number and date of expiration and keep it at home to avoid further delays. You can then start the process to recover.

I always brought my laptop on visits here. You can get a good cable lock and lock it to the bedframe or other unbreakable, non-removable items. At least it keeps the honest people honest. I just never left it out in plain view when not in the room.

You would do well to make photocopies of your passport(s) license(s)and keep the copies separate from the actual documents. You might want to leave copies at home, too. We do this whenever we travel.
