Measles Exposure - San Diego flight to Hawaii

Here%26#39;s an FYI - Most people may have already been contacted but just in case you%26#39;re in Hawaii via San Diego checking TA...

Measles Outbreak Grows, May Have Spread At Airport

Last Updated:

02-12-08 at 6:41PM

An 11-month-old baby who was treated at the Children%26#39;s Clinic in La Jolla before traveling to Hawaii has contracted measles, prompting San Diego County health officials today to warn air passengers they may have been exposed to the disease.

It is the fifth confirmed case of measles stemming from an outbreak of the disease locally, according to officials with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.

Health officials suspect that another five people -- including a 10-month-old infant hospitalized yesterday and a 2-year-old toddler -- are also infected with measles.

The 11-month-old infant is believed to have acquired the disease at Children%26#39;s Clinic, where the first measles patient received care on Jan. 25, according to the HHSA.

The five pending measles cases are also believed to have been contracted at the Children%26#39;s Clinic, according to health officials, who are calling it the county%26#39;s first outbreak of measles in children in 17 years.

The baby traveled with family members to Hawaii on Saturday and is now in isolation at a military base until there is no further risk of the disease spreading, according to the HHSA.

Officials with the Hawaii Department of Health are working to notify passengers on Hawaiian Airlines Flight 15, which departed Lindbergh Field%26#39;s Terminal 2 on Saturday morning bound for Honolulu.

';It is extremely important that passengers, particularly children, in close proximity to this area of the airport around that time (8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) are aware that they may have been exposed to the disease,'; said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county%26#39;s public health officer.

I am going to assume that if you or your children have been immunized OR have already had the Measles, it should not be a worry. Most children who are in school, have probably been immunized. I know some slip through the cracks and/or aren%26#39;t immunized properly due to beliefs. Older adults, such as myself(58) didn%26#39;t ever have the immunization because it didn%26#39;t exist. But we usually got the Measles and then we were protected from getting them again.

I%26#39;m not sure of the age at which children are being immunized these days with the Measles vaccine, but I would think definitely by 2 y/o.

Wondering why it wasn%26#39;t made clear that if you have already had Measles or been given the vaccine, there is no need to panic?

Measles Exposure - San Diego flight to Hawaii

I agree it isn%26#39;t a problem for most people, I just wanted to give a heads up.

Children are immunized at 12 months old.

Vast majority of adults born before 1960 had measles as a child (vaccine came out in 1962).

Children now get a booster later in childhood that should protect them long term.

The few cases of measles seen in the country per year are in infants not immunized, immigrants, and the rare adult whose single vaccine as a child has lost its effectiveness.

Distance from Pearl Harbor to Sea Life Park

Hello:

My husband and I are planning to visit Pearl Harbor and Sea Life Park (only to swim with dolphins) in one day as we are flying in from Maui. Does anyone know how far Pearl Harbor is from Sea Life Park? If we go on a Saturday, how is traffic on the road from Pearl Harbor to Sea Life? Thank you for your comments.

Distance from Pearl Harbor to Sea Life Park

It is about 40 minutes from USS Arizona.

Traffic will not be bad if you take H-3.

To get to H-3 from USS Arizona Memorial parking lot:

Make a left onto Kamehameha Highway. Get into the far right lane right away.

Turn right onto Salt Lake Blvd. You will want to follow Salt Lake Blvd around to the right. There will be a McDonald%26#39;s on the right. Get into the left lane %26amp; turn left (Kahuapaani St.) at the stoplight at the end of Aloha Stadium parking lot.

Go through the first stoplight %26amp; get into the right lane. Take the Honolulu exit. Stay in the far right lane %26amp; take the H-3 exit. H-3 exit will be in about 1/4 mile.

The entire distance from Arizona Memorial parking lot to H-3 exit is only about 3/4 mile. So these turns will come up pretty fast.

driveguidemagazines.com/oahu_wahiawa_pearlha鈥?/a>

In Kaneohe:

Take the 2nd Kaneohe exit (Kamehameha Highway (83)) to the right.

Go about 1/2 mile. Take Pali Highway (61) to the left toward Kailua.

In about 2-3 miles, turn right onto Kalanianole Highway (72).

That will take you to Sea Life Park.

driveguidemagazines.com/oahu_waiahole_makapu鈥?/a>

To return to the airport, you can take Pali Highway (61) or Likelike Highway (63) across the mountain back to Honolulu.

Or if you have time, continue around on Kalanianaole Highway %26amp; stop at places like Halona Blowhole. Its not far from Sea Life Park. Take it back to Honolulu. It will become H-1.

First time to Maui

We are planning a family trip to Maui and are using the book Maui Revealed to plan.

I would like some input on our plan:

1) Stay 2 nights in south Maui at beach ect., travel northwest sightseeing along the coast line to north Maui;

2) Stay in North Maui for three nights, more beach stuff and seeing the sights around there;

3) Take to road to Hana and stay there three nights, taking in the points of interest;

4) Finishing up with sightseeing along the road south towards our starting location in South Maui

Does this plan sound do-able?

Thank you in advance for any input!

Ziggy and Company

First time to Maui

Frankly, it sounds like a lot of driving to me. Plus, you will lose up to half a day to move from one place to another (pack, check out, travel, check in, etc.). I%26#39;d recommend finding one place to stay for the whole time and then let some of your plan unfold as you are there. It seems that whenever we go to Hawaii we always wish we would%26#39;ve had one more day to do nothing but enjoy the beach/pool/relax. We%26#39;ve never left thinking that there was one site that we should%26#39;ve seen.

First time to Maui

agree with earlier poster--------you are going to spend most of your vacation packing and unpacking

if you are going to insist on changing locations i would stay at no more then 2 places

A different perspective...

We stayed a week on our first trip to Maui and spent 4 days in Lahaina, 2 in Hana and 2 in Wailea.

On our second trip we spent 10 days total on Maui and spent 5 in Napili, 2 in Hana and 3 in Wailea.

This year we are staying 9 nights in West Maui.

I never had a problem moving around the island every 3-4 days. We actually preferred it. If that is the kind of traveler that you are, then go for it. It certainly isn%26#39;t for everyone though.

I am curious why you would stay in North Maui for 3 days instead of West Maui? In my opinion North Maui is the least pleasureable part of the island and I couldn%26#39;t think of things to do up there for 3 days, but I may be uninformed as well. The weather never seemed as nice up there either.

Maui is a very small island. You can drive from the east side (airport) to the west side (North Kihei or Maalea) in 30 minutes. It%26#39;s about two hours max from Wailea (South Maui) to Kapalua (West Maui). It is easier to get to Haleakala and Road to Hana from South Maui.

I%26#39;d pick a spot in either South or West Maui for the bulk of the trip and spend no more than two nights in Hana.

You begin the Road to Hana near the airport (Kahului)and must return via the same road. You might plan to do this at the end of your trip, in order to be near the airport the day you depart.

I agree that you will be doing a lot of packing and unpacking. Find a spot you like and stay there or you may choose to do a night or two in Hana but that would be it. Wailea to Kaanapali is really only about a one hour drive and I would recommend staying in Wailea if that fits the budget. The other thing you will get stuck doing is waiting for check in times as most places will want you to check out by 11am and you will have to find something to do until 3 or 4pm when you can check in to the next spot.

Pick only one part of the Island...TA is great for area%26#39;s that fit your likes...there are only a few area%26#39;s that are more than a 1 or 2 hour drive from ANYWHERE! HA..Hana is a long day(plan a full day) but I advise finding a home base and not wasting days and days moving about! You are looking at a short vacation...don%26#39;t waste it!

The Maui revealed book is great, but very unpopular with the locals. The book shows you beauitful pictures of Blue Pool off the Hana Hawaii. We went there and it was the highlight of our trip.

Since then it has become a nightmare, you may run into a angry hawaiian named frank at the end of the road, who does not want you there. I heard a rumor he has thrown coconuts and even punched a tourist in the face. It is a shame, because this place is truley paradise, but show some aloha and avoid this one.

nicke1346,are you serious????

I would skip staying in Hana and spend more time in West Maui. What do you mean when you say North Maui?

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO!

Changing plans. Will stay is one spot. Looking at Kaanaplai, Wailea, or South Kihei? Which is best for hanging out on beach %26amp; sightseeing with 12 %26amp; 14 kids. Still would like to spend one or two nights in Hana? Also is Trilogy daytrip for snorkeling worth the money? My kids have never been on a sailboat or snorkeled. Thanks again!

What time do shops close?

Hi all ~

We leave tomorrow and I can%26#39;t wait!!

What time do the shops close in the Poipu Shopping Village, Coconut Marketplace, the shops in Hanalei, and the vendors at Spouting Horn?

I figured we%26#39;d hit the different shops after the beach, but wasn%26#39;t sure what time they closed.

Thanks for the help!

What time do shops close?

Aloha Bunecca! I wish I could give you specifics . . . I just know that we eat dinner after sunset and usually wander around shops after that when we are in Hanalei, and many of the shops are still open.

I just want to wish you a wonderful trip - we%26#39;ll be looking forward to that trip report when you return! :)

What time do shops close?

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

The vendors at Spouting Horn are closed up by right around 5pm -- the shops in the Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village stay open until 9 I believe - same with Coconut Marketplace (again, I believe) - not sure about Hanalei. Some stores might close earlier on Sundays.

Malama Pono,

Janet

It varies in Hanalei town. Some shops like Sand people stay open until 9. Smaller shops close depending on the surf conditions.

Thanks everyone! I am giddy with excitement right now LOL. It is so nice when someone asks us to do something next week, to be able to say ';Oh, sorry, we%26#39;ll be in Hawaii . . . '; :-)

Thanks for the info. about the shops. I have strict orders to bring back cool stuff for our girls!!

Na Pali boat tour in 1 week

Hello,

I have been reading lots of posts about the options for a Na Pali boat tour in February and I am still confused. I really want to see the Na Pali coast via boat, but I realize February is not the best time to do this. I leave this weekend and I am not sure if I should book ahead of time or wait until I get there to check out the weather. Also, after reading so many reviews, I am confused which company to pick.

Help! Thanks! :)

Na Pali boat tour in 1 week

Wait until you get there so you can check out the weather.

Most of the boats will be going out of Port Allen on the West Shore this time of year, hopefully someone else who either lives there or visits this time can help more, we usually go in the fall.

Na Pali boat tour in 1 week

Yes, wait until you get there, you will not have to worry about getting a tour.

We went on Liko tours out of Port Allen (April 06)They did a really great job. The scenery was spectacular, no they did not go all the way up the coast, but we did not know the difference, it was beautiful to us.

Plus they were very friendly and knowledgable. We would go with them again.

Indeed, the previous posts are right on.

Book after you get on island, especially during our winter swell months.

There are going to be surf warnings posted soon for

large north shore swells with wave faces 15-20 feet.

But, do check out the conditions and also ask before booking with any of the boat tour companies.

Probably a good idea to book on a larger vessel this time of year. And those boats will be going out of the west side.

Capt, Andy, Blue Dolphin, Holo Holo, and Liko would be some of the Napali Tour outfits to consider.

Denny

If you are the least bit prone to seasickness, take some remedies like dramamine BEFORE the trip. Once the train leaves the station, so to speak, it is too late to stop the seasickness. The last ride I went on in the calmer autumn months rendered 10% of the passengers heaving over the rails. I don%26#39;t want to scare you, just be prepared so you don%26#39;t ruin an expensive and breathtakingly beautiful trip.

I ditto that. So many visitors on our boat were sick. I heard them talking that they were used to being on boats back home-well that experience may be a lake in Indiana!

The weather can turn at anytime, so it is best to be prepared, even if you think you will not have an issue. Try the seabands if you do not want to take dramamine. How awful to be sick and miss the beauty of Napali

Thanks everyone for your great advice. I have definitely heard some horror stories of sea-sickness during the rough winter months.

Thanks again! :)

  • First time to Maui, looking for Condo on the beach

    Hi!

I have been reading the boards and have gleaned so much information from everyone here.

We are planning on traveling to Hawaii this year with a 6 and 2 year old. I am looking for a condo on the beach where my family can play and close to areas of fun.

I am overwhelmed with information right now. I have been looking at Koa Lagoon or Hale Kamaole. Any information out there on either of these would be greatly appreciated. And information on other sites would be wonderful!

I am looking for a 2 bedroom with a kitchen, lanai and beach view.

First time to Maui, looking for Condo on the beach

Many people have their favorites, for a variety of good reasons. We really like a place called Papakea. We always rent through an owner from VRBO or the like:

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…papakea-resort

Do a search for ';Papakea'; and you%26#39;ll see some of the things that I and others have written. You%26#39;re going to love Maui!

First time to Maui, looking for Condo on the beach

A good place to start your search is here:

    http://wizardpub.com/

You can get aerial views of all of the facilities on Maui. You can also get reviews, though I%26#39;m not certain that the publishers aren%26#39;t more than a little biased.

Of those two I%26#39;d certainly choose Hale Kamaole. Koa Lagoon is in North Kihei; you%26#39;d have to drive to a good beach.

I first read your post as wanting a beachfront condo, but then you mentioned beach view.

If you want beachfront in Kihei on a good swimming beach, look at Hale Pau Hana, Kihei Surfside, Mana Kai Maui. Sugar Beach in North Kihei has the only good beach in that area, but is a bit isolated.

There is a whole string of condos with 2 BRs along Kihei Road, across from the Kam I, II and III beach parks. Mana Kai Maui is right on Keawakapu beach and Kiehi Surfside is next door. This is one of the best beaches for children. Across Kihei Road but near both Kam III and Keawakapu are Maui Hill, Maui Kamaole and...Hale Kamaole.

Wow, thank you everyone. There is just so much information I am afraid of getting the wrong place. I have two children that are going to want to be in the water, alot! What is a good beach to just hang at.

The Kamaole Beach Parks have not only good beaches, but shade trees, grassy areas with picnic benches, restrooms, showers, lifeguards, volleyball nets. A %26#39;cheap date%26#39; is to fetch some fastfood from across Kihei Road -- or bring food with you from your condo -- and picnic there. Can%26#39;t beat the view! The parks are popular with visitors and locals alike.

Keawakapu is in front of the Mana Kai Maui and is the northernmost part of the whole long stretch of Wailea beaches that extend south past the Wailea resort condos and hotels.

All beaches in Hawaii are public. There is parking at most, although somewhat limited through Wailea.

    Maui with family, little kids

We%26#39;re going to Maui (Wailea) in a couple weeks. It will be my husband and myself, and our 2 sons - 2 1/2 and 11 months. What are some good family outings in the area? We%26#39;re up for anything!

    Maui with family, little kids

Your oldest would probably really like the Maui Aquarium. It%26#39;s pretty nice. I%26#39;m trying to remember how much admission is. It%26#39;s been about 3 1/2 years since we went to it. I want to say it was around $20-$25 per adult, and am completely drawing a blank on children%26#39;s prices.

    Maui with family, little kids

Maui Ocean Center is a must! Also - it%26#39;s fun for the kids to feed the Koi fish at the Maui Prince which is 5 minutes from Wailea. The sugar train in Lahaina. I%26#39;d get a bunch of cheap beach/pool toys at Kmart, Wal-Mart, or Longs and let them have fun with that. On Wednesday evenings there is a hula show at the Shops at Wailea which they might like too. There%26#39;s a bowling alley in Kahalui and an indoor amusement park.

    Makapuu Hike to Dragons Nostrils

My wife and I like to hike. We are planning on going for a few hikes on Oahu during our 9 day stay. Should we do the Hike to the Dragons Nostrils up to Makapuu Point? Also, will we be able to see Whales from up there in early March. Lastly, I have heard that there is a lighthouse down below. Is there any way or trail to get down to it or is the Lighthouse off Limits to tourists.

    Thanks in advance

    Makapuu Hike to Dragons Nostrils

The lighthouse itself is off limits. Though I do occasionally see people walking around the lighthouse.

Near the lighthouse there is a trail that goes to the lighthouse that says keep out or something like that. The main trail continues above the lighthouse.

Best place to see whales is from the main trail. As soon as you turn toward the lighthouse, there will be a small lookout %26amp; sign telling about the humpback whales. Stop there for about 15 minutes %26amp; scan the ocean. This will be about 2/3 of the way from the parking lot to the lighthouse.

I have not been to Dragon%26#39;s Nostril. The trail to Dragon%26#39;s Nostril starts somewhere near the humpback whale sign or near where the trail splits to go above the lighthouse. It isn%26#39;t marked %26amp; may be hard to find.

    Makapuu Hike to Dragons Nostrils

The trail to the Dragons Nostrils(if you can call it a trail) starts near the whale watching sign. It looks like a gully heading down the cliff. It is more of a scramble up and down the cliff. There are white arrows painted on the rock, but you can%26#39;t really see them until you are going back up. So going down is kind of a guess if you haven%26#39;t done it before. Unless there is a really good swell for them to work it probably isn%26#39;t worth the effort. When they are on though it is quite incredible.

Compare Pacifico to Io's Restaurant Please

Aloha- We are still struggling with restaurants but as I said earlier, this is the ONE thing that unites all of us and can make a wonderful memory, if it is the right place. Could some of you please share the differences with I%26#39;o and Pacifico (Sister Restaurants?) We had settled on I%26#39;os and more and more people are recommending Pacificos and we are unsure what the difference is..

    Mahalo

Compare Pacifico to Io's Restaurant Please

Did you know that they have their own website with links to the different restaurants? Once I decided on Pacific%26#39;o, I booked a reservation online at their site and was able to specify ';ocean front'; table. (I have not been yet so cannot give a real comparison- just judged by reviews of others that favor Pacific%26#39;o.)

Compare Pacifico to Io's Restaurant Please

I have been to both. Pacifico%26#39;s offers the beachfront view and such where as Io%26#39;s does not. Io%26#39;s has a courtyard with outdoor dining. I personally thought the food was better at Io%26#39;s but I also enjoyed Pacifico%26#39;s.

for those who are wondering the difference both restaurants are regional cuisine. pacifico has more of an asain influence and i%26#39;o is more mediteranian. pacifico is considered to have the best view in maui, as for food i%26#39;o is more refined and considered the best kept secret by most who live in maui. the view isn%26#39;t bad either considering it is right next door.

We have more ';ordinary'; palates, so the menu at Pacifico%26#39;s appeals more to us. The Feast at Lele is in front of I%26#39;o%26#39;s. Depending on time of day, it may be more noisy.

i am a foodie and have been to lots of fantastic restaurants all over the county. i always do research on them so i dont waste my time and money. i was wanting to go to either of these reataurants because of the website and reviews that stated how fresh and great the food was. when we arrived, only pacific o was open for lunch. we had a great table overlooking the view. there were 3 other couples on the patio at that time. after sitting for 10 minutes, a server came over to say hi and take our drink order. about 15 minutes later as he was taking the other couples check, my husband asked for his drink (a glass of wine, nothing that had to be made). the server said, sure. about 10 minutes later, he came back with the wine and the change for the other couple. as the other couple left they stopped at our table and said, ';i hope you have alot of time, they are slow and the food wasnt worth the wait';. 10 minutes later the server came back to take our order. by now there is no one in the restaurant but-- us at the tables and 3 people at the bar (who i think worked there anyway). 30 minutes later the server says ';your order should be out soon';. 10 minutes later he came out and asked us ';what did we order again?';. i know, i know you are thinking ';maui time'; and all of that. but, honestly we are the ONLY ONES THERE!!!!!!! my husband ordered mahi over wheat pasta with mushrooms and i ordered the dos tacos dish (fish tacos with %26#39;slaw). niether one,in my opinion, takes too long to cook. 15 minutes later our food is delivered. my husband got his fish, i got some dish that looked like chicken on flat bread with fries. i asked ';where is the slaw'; he said, oh, i guess we are out of it and walked away. i decided that i wasnt going to eat this chicken and fries. when my husband flagged the server down and told him this, he said, ok i will go find out if there is slaw. well, he took my plate and was gone for 20 minutes. then brought my tacos with the slaw (note--it was TOTALLY different dish). he said to us ';there is a new cook in the kitchen, he is really slow and doesnt know how too cook the dishes yet. here you go, we even gave you an extra taco on us.'; by this time i am pissed. i am disgusted with myself for believing the reataurants website and for wasting too much time at this place for nothing. the food was cold and HELLO i am not a MORON, ';dos tacos'; MEANS 2 tacos!!!! my experience was HORRIBLE!!! be careful. i would make very sure the chef or the manager was onsite! 2 hours for lunch with below average food and service does not make for a good dining experience!

That is awful that that happened to you. I%26#39;m guessing that the reason it happened to you was not because it was busy but because there were not many people there and because it was NOT busy. (I worked in the biz for years during college.) The server was probably off doing sidework or prepping to wrap up and go home.

If you go to a restaurant in the mid to late afternoon, unfortunately, service can sometimes suck.

    Farmers market near Kapa'a?

we will be at the Lai Nani in Kapa%26#39;a in two weeks. Is there a farmers market up there? I think there is one in Koloa on monday but don%26#39;t know about Kapa%26#39;a.

    Farmers market near Kapa'a?

    Hugh,

No worries, you do not have to drive to poipu, since there is a Kapa%26#39;a area sunshine market:

Wed @ 3:30pm at the Kapaa New Town Park at Kahau and Olohena Rd. Ask your concierge or reservations office at your resort for easy directions.

Kauai sunshine markets are really fun, early is a good idea, and you will also see products that might not be familar to you.....ask the vendors about them.

    Denny

    Farmers market near Kapa'a?

    Denny

Thanks for the info. I hope Kauai is rained out by the time we get there!!!!!!!!!!!11 Last time we were there a year before Iniki it poured 6 of the 7 days we were there and that was at Po%26#39;ipu.

    Hugh

    hugh,

No worries if it does rain, eh? you will be at the lae nani!! so beautiful there...great place to watch the rain. but i will wish for you lots of sunshine!

    ~ very jealous syd

About 7 minutes from Lai Nani is the Friday (3 p.m.) Farmer%26#39;s Market (Sunshine Market) at Vidinha stadium in Lihue. This is very convenient to Lai Nani time, traffic and parking-wise. Drive south from Lai Nani just past the airport by about a 1/2 mile. You will see the stadium light towers and then turn right into the stadium driveway(s).

The one in Koloa on Monday shuts down about 1 and those same vendors transport their goods to the Kukui Grove Shopping Center for that market...just behind Sears.

    http://www.kauai.gov/default.aspx?tabid=214

This site lists all time and location on the island.

Should mention that beside the Kauai County sanctioned Sunshine markets there are numerous independent vendors and ';honor boxes'; along the roadways.

    kauaiworld.com/articles/…news10.txt

List of farmer%26#39;s markets in today%26#39;s (2/13/2008) Garden Island News.

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Something that I find fascinating about all of our local sunshine markets is that each one is distinctly different from the other -- for instance, the one here in Koloa definitely caters to the resort crowd, always more flowers, leis, etc. than some of the others and the crowd is noticeably predominantly visitors with some locals thrown in.

The one later in the same day at Kukui Grove which attracts pretty much the same vendors - is predominantly Philipino and the food items are geared more towards that ethnic group.

Same thing with the others - so each one you go to you will see variations in the items that the vendors have for sale.

By the by - in March they are starting another sunshine market at the Coconut Marketplace every Saturday!

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

    koloagirl...welcome ';home.'; Loved your Moorea/Tahiti post-trip report.

Oh! I love the ';honor boxes'; with produce etc. We usually always stop to look, and if we%26#39;re lucky get to chat with the resident stocking the box. Smiles and ';aloha'; all around.

On co-worker of mine got into such an involved conversation that the homeowner invited him back to his garden to see all the different types of tropical fruit trees and flowers he had growing there, and he shared some of the more special fruits that aren%26#39;t usually relegated the honor box with him. When he returned home, my co-worker FedEx%26#39;d a fresh whole salmon back to his new Kauai friend. The families now get together everytime my co-worker vacations on Kauai.

    Grand Wailea Resturants

    Greetings --

We are staying at the Westin but migrating to the Grand Wailea to enjoy the spa one evening. Since we are paying a resort fee to enter...I would like to make the most of our evening.

    1) After the spa we would like to eat dinner on the grounds. What restaurant would you recommend? Is the Humu worth the experience/money? Or is the Bistro a better outside/relaxing experience?

    2) Is there a space to relax at the spa prior to starting services? Indoor or outdoor? Again, if we are making an afternoon of it I would like to go and relax prior to starting the services.

Appreciate your input and hope the spa lives up to its reputation! Net/Net I%26#39;m sure it will be lovely to be pampered.

    Grand Wailea Resturants

Most services at the spa seem to include include an hour of Termé Wailea Hydrotherapy. You can see more details here: http://www.grandwailea.com/spa/default.asp

During our stay at GW last April, our then 14 year old niece and I spent an afternoon at the spa. We did not do the hydrotherapy prior, it was completely packed with incredibly loud and energetic teenage girls. I opted to skip the migraine and shop instead :-). Obviously without a 30-something aunt in tow-- Dn would have probably joined the fun. After changing into the provided robes, we were led to a waiting area. While waiting we were able to help ourselves to water and magazines. We waited only a short amount of time before being led back to the treatment rooms. If you want to hang out in the spa before your treatments begin, definitely look into the hydrotherapy, otherwise arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow time to check-in.

Unfortunately we couldn%26#39;t get into Humu, so we went to Kincha instead. The Japanese buffet was typical, but good. For four, with tax/tip/drinks it was over $300. If you really have your heart set on eating at Humu, make arrangements as soon as you can!

    Grand Wailea Resturants

I don%26#39;t know about the restaurants but I can tell you the GW Spa was the best spa experience I%26#39;ve ever had!

Plan on arriving at least an hour prior to your treatment(s). The spa has a Termé Wailea HydroTherapy area where you can soak in 5 or 6 different baths. There is also a cascading waterfall massage, a jacuzzi tub and a Swiss Jet shower. You can use the Eucalyptus steam and a redwood sauna as well.

I seem to remember that there were indoor and outdoor relaxation areas where you wait for your treatments.

    Enjoy : )

I love the Grand Wailea Resort and Spa. We have stayed there many times but I honestly don%26#39;t believe that any of the restaurants are particularly special. Maybe wander over to the Shops for dinner at Tommy Bahamas or take the beach walk to the 4Seasons (great restaurants) or the new Mala Wailea Restaurant at the Marriott. All are in very easy walking distance from the GWR.

Forget the GW restaurants and walk next door to the Four Seasons and enjoy Ferraro%26#39;s. The food is far better, the views are great, and the place sits right over the beach.

It is at max a five minute walk from the Grand either along the beach or along the paved beach front path.

I%26#39;ve eaten at Humu twice. We really liked it. The restaurant itself is setup really neat and we enjoyed the experience. The only negative that I would offer is that I didn%26#39;t think the service was on par with the prices.

Keep in mind that this was in 2004 and 2005. Things may have changed.

Great -- thank you for the responses. We will head over to the Four Season%26#39;s for dinner. Glad I asked.

One last spa question -- the HydroTherapy area with the baths. Is this more a public area with everyone in bathsuits or semi-private experience without bathing suits? Do the men have seperate areas or are the joint?

I%26#39;ve had different experiences across different spas around the world. This however, will be the first time my husband will be doing the ';bathing'; part of the spa so I need to set his expectations.

    Thanks

Go somewhere else to eat, unless you don%26#39;t mind spending an arm and a leg for your meal!!

The GW Spa has two different bath areas separated by gender. The Terme baths can either be entered in a birthday suite or a bathing suit - your choice.

The mens and womens areas are separate. The hydrotherapy baths are in an open area and it is bathing suit optional. You are supplied with a towel and slippers in the baths and a robe in the treatment area.

  • Experience with Go! airline vs Island Air

    Aloha, everyone

We make take a day trip the end of April to Molokai from Honolulu. Should we take Go! or Island Air? What have your experiences been? They are competitive price-wise, so any comments re do they run on time, flight cancellations, etc. would be helpful.

    Thank you for your help.

Experience with Go! airline vs Island Air

I have not taken Go! but they fly 2 different kinds of planes, a small jet and a very small prop plane. Island Air flies only one plane, a 36 seat prop plane. Island Air is very reliable and we have taken it to Lana%26#39;i several times. They have comfortable leather seats and fly out of the commuter terminal in Honolulu. They do have limits on baggage. Only small carry-ons, and 50 lbs total checked per person. Check their web site for details. I would also check Go! website to see what plane they use. The small one just holds about 10 people, and has weight restrictions.

Experience with Go! airline vs Island Air

Thank you for the feedback. I booked on Island Air.

    Aloha!

    Recommendation on where to stay

Hello, I will be visiting the Maui area next month during spring pbreak and wanted to know if there was such a place to stay that offers:

cheaper (under 200.00 a night), secluded, away from tourist areas, closer to Hana, directly on the beach, walk out to beach, have a 4 and 8 year old, do not need restaurants, pools, any activites at the place staying or nearby, just want a place that is nice, updated and does not look like it is from the 60%26#39;s along with mold, paint peeling off walls, etc. Can be hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, cabin, guest house, residental area, etc.

Also what is the difference between the bay and the ocean in maui, from photos they booth look good.

    Thanks a lot

    Kim

    Recommendation on where to stay

imo you are looking a bit late for such a busy time but im sure you will find something

maui being the tourist area that it is you will be hard pressed to find something away from the tourist areas unless you want to spend big bucks

good luck in your search --im certain someone will be able to help you

    Recommendation on where to stay

I would look in the Napili area. It isn%26#39;t close to Hana, but it%26#39;s a fantastic beach and a very nice area.

We stayed at the Napili Bay resort and it%26#39;s steps away from the Napili Bay beach. It%26#39;s not a resort, but it was clean and we loved it. Again, that beach is just awesome. Lahaina was about 15-20 mins away.

Check out vrbo.com - It%26#39;s separated out by sections of the island. If you find something that makes sense, then come back here and ask about some specific properties. But you better move fast.

You%26#39;ll be hard pressed to find anything that heads toward Hana that will be on a beach for $200.00. Not that many beaches going that way to begin with.

I agree with a previous poster who said check out Napili area. You%26#39;ll find walk out places to the beach there in your price range. Not touristy (like Kaanapali or Lahaina) but close enough to go check those areas out for a day. Could then also take a day trip toward Hana to see the sights there.

I don%26#39;t think that there is much ';closer'; to Hana. You%26#39;re either in Hana or on a long drive to get there. As others have noted, there are tons of condos north of the Kaanapali area up to Napili. That area is not touristy, but there are some stores to easily get to for food buying. We often stay at Papakea at rent from an owner on VRBO.com. We have 3 kids, 16, 10 and 10, and Papakea fits very well for a casual relaxing vacation for the whole family. You could probably find a 2 bedroom unit for under 200, certainly a 1 bedroom.

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/鈥apakea-resort

I%26#39;d get moving for best, or any, selection. Spring break is high season, and many units are booked a year in advance.

Thanks for all of your help. It helped. There is still lots of places left.

    Thanks

    where to stay in maui

I am planning a week vacation in maui and was planning on staying off of kaanapali beach. The resort that i was going to book was kaanapali beach club for $1450.00 for 7nts and a rental car. Any other ideas are welcome.

    where to stay in maui

We%26#39;ve stayed at Papakea Resort %26amp; rented thru owner for a Gulf front 3rd floor, 1 bdrm unit. LOVED IT!

Also stayed at Kihei Beach Resort (www.kiheibeachresorts.com)

%26amp; also LOVED that ocean front, 1 bdrm, 3rd floor unit!!!

    Both were quiet %26amp; clean.

    Car rental - what size?

Hope this isn%26#39;t too silly a question - but what size car will I need to hire for 3 adults and one young teenager with 4 suitcases and a couple of rucksacks?

A US Full-size car looks enormous in pictures on websites but show capacity for only 2 large and 2 small cases. But then again we%26#39;re only carrying bags from the airport to the accommodation ......... Would a mid-size be big enough?

    Thanks,

    Car rental - what size?

I would do the mid-size, if you are only using it a few times with the bags! You can carry one on your lap, right? I always think they are a little less than honest about size, so you always get a bigger one!

You are on Maui - just have fun! :)

    Car rental - what size?

Definitely mid-size - it will accomodate your guests %26amp; luggage. As well, parking spaces on the island and in hotel parkades can be small so this size is much easier to park.

Will a mid size be too small for 3 adults %26amp; 2 teens w/5 (small) suitcases %26amp; 2 sets golf clubs? We usually rent full size but have heard parking spaces are tight. Thanks.

I think the answer depends on the make of the car ...

I really don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s any way to get five suitcases, carry-ons, and golf clubs into a mid-sized car, except maybe on your lap.

I%26#39;d go for a van or an SUV. We have five going next month, and we%26#39;re getting a minivan.

Just a point we found that it was difficult parking a Chevy Trailblazer in our condo parking lot because of the size of the lot and the spaces.

    Not impossible just a pain.

We also found the parking lot spaces at some of the shopping areas for smaller vehicles too.

    just a thought.

    Would a mid-size be big enough for 4 adults %26amp; 4 bags?

Thrifty says a mid-size is a Chrysler Sebring or similar.

LexiGirl, how did we get up to five suitcases, plus carry ons, plus golf clubs ?

Bud--so glad I have you to monitor my posts. I honestly don%26#39;t know how I would get along on TA without you checking details.

I was replying to lovestotravel, who specifically mentioned 5 bags and a mid-sized car. I was assuming most people on here were intelligent enough to make the connection.

Lexigirl, I apologize if I offended you. Obviously I made a mistake and I am sorry for that.

    Mauna Lani vs. Marriott

Is the Mauna Lani worth $140.00 more per night for the same type room? (upper floor ocean view)

    Mauna Lani vs. Marriott

The Mauna Lani is worth $1,400,000.00 more than the Marriott here, which is the worst Marriott in the chain!

    Mauna Lani vs. Marriott

Only you know if the differences are %26#39;worth it%26#39; to you. I%26#39;d say not if it meant you had to akimp on food, cut your trip short, worry about gas costs (you will drive a lot on this island), or not be able to take a snorkel boat trip or helicopter flight that you want to do.

Read the reviews for both and look carefully at the travelers%26#39; photos (not the ones the hotel puts up). If you have specific questions, then ask those.

I am no expert, but I definitely dug around on TA for tips %26amp; I asked questions. We had booked a condo, then reconsidered - frankly it didn%26#39;t feel right. Looked into more condos, then I started looking all over the place.

However, when I finally dove into Mauna Lani%26#39;s website I was a gonner. I read and I researched, read some more - done deal - I informed hubby that this was where we were staying. He just kissed me and that was that.

The Mauna Lani is not in the thick of things, the grounds are lovely, the beach is beautiful, and for us it just felt right.

Last week another TA poster offered this: panaviz1.com/customers/…index.html

Mariott is a corporate conglomerate with hotels worldwide. Corporations put food on my table and pay my mortgage, but Mauna Lani is a one of a kind. They are not only stewards to the history, the land and the people, I liked that they don%26#39;t slap you with extra fees. For us it was a no brainer, but I know how we vacation and we don%26#39;t require an ocean view room - will spend most of the day at the beach or exploring and when its dark its dark and nothing to see anyway.

Everyone is different - I applaud people%26#39;s differences, but I also know that when I go to Hawaii I go for Hawaii, not just a resort. Not just a view. It%26#39;s a feeling and when returning from a vacation there I like to nurse it for many weeks afterwards. We went so far as to completely rearrange our schedule in order to observe some things there, music and %26#39;talk story%26#39; and I look forward to getting acquainted with every inch of the grounds there.

Will you be doing activities every day?

Living in Portland you have many beaches not far away, many resorts and fine hotels within your grasp. We live not far to the north of you, I adore my tall Douglas fir trees and thick growth of blackberries and salal - but are you a city person or a suburbanite, country or high rise resident? Where would you be most comfortable?

It all depends on what you like to do, what you expect to get out of your vacation. Only you can answer that. However you have definitely come to the right place and the folks here on TA are a wellspring of information. I nod a grateful Mahalo them all.

    beautifully put ...

I can%26#39;t say if the room category itself is so much better, but the resort is in a whole different class. As was said, it depends on who you are, what you like, and how much you can afford.

I myself can never afford the nicest places, but if I had the money to pay the difference I would choose the Mauna Lani, whereas for me the Four Seasons is just too much money for a night ... I am not capable of enjoying a room THAT much compared to what else I could get for $800 and up, so only if I were wealthy would I stay there, but to each their own choices!

That%26#39;s like asking if there%26#39;s that much of a difference between a McDonald%26#39;s hamburger and a kobe steak at Cut.

YES it%26#39;s worth $140 more per night. The Marriot is a Motel 6 compared to the Mauna Lani.

KK, I challenege you to stay at the Four Seasons and not enjoy it. I think it%26#39;s physically impossible :-)

Shea, I%26#39;m sure I would enjoy it if someone else were paying for it, but at my income level and that room cost, I couldn%26#39;t!

aside from fasting...4 seasons on a budget?

We are staying at the 4 season on the bay in July. Looking forward to it, looks wonderful. But is it possible to avoid spending a fortune on meals and extras while there? Are there reasonable (or hidden local spots) restaurants close to the hotel (walking distance) to enjoy vs paying $10 a pop for an OJ at the resort? Any isite on 4 seasons on a budget is appreciated!

aside from fasting...4 seasons on a budget?

    Hi Skateboards ~

You will probably need to take the shuttle from the FS to Lana%26#39;i City to find any affordable choices. Blue Ginger, Cafe 565, Canoe%26#39;s, Pele%26#39;s Other Garden, %26amp; Coffee Works are all within walking distance from the shuttle stop at Hotel Lana%26#39;i. Unfortunately, there are not any %26#39;cheap%26#39; choices at the resort. You can buy junk food in the gift shop, but that%26#39;s about it. I think you will find some good choices in town. There is also a small grocery store called Richard%26#39;s that has a lot of items you would find at home. You have a small fridge in your room at the FS. You could buy a few items to store in your fridge and that will save you some bucks!

    =^..^=

aside from fasting...4 seasons on a budget?

Four Season and budget... hmmm... I really don%26#39;t think so!

Fast now so you can spend some money there! Take your own rum and make your Mai Tai%26#39;s. Take some wine from here if you drink wine.

I agree with naturecat. There are a number of good, more economical choices in town. I would caution you though to be mindful of what time it is. Many of the restaurants in town do close up pretty early in the evening. If you are a night owl who normally eats pretty late, you may want to head into town earlier than you would normally plan to go to dinner. Also, choices are more limited in town on Sunday as well.

Naturecat hit it right on the button. If you do want to splurge on a meal at one of the resort restaurants, you can do what my wife and I usually do; split an appetizer and skip dessert (skipping the wine would save the most, but that is where I draw the line).

    Skateboards,

Be careful if you order pool side lunch At the Lodge last July, we looked at the menu handed to us at the poolside. It indicated mahimahi and chips for $16. Maitai%26#39;s $12. OK, we thought that is not tooo bad. Somehow the $16 each turned into $32 each and the maitai was more than the menu indicated PLUS they added a $28 gratuity and my husband didn%26#39;t notice that (he was in shock) and signed for a $12 tip! We could have bought somebody%26#39;s family in Lanai City a 2 day supply of groceries!! I was embarrassed to do so, but I complained to the desk the next day and she looked the bill up on the computer. She seemed shocked also but said that must be the price. She was kind enough to take off the $28 gratuity. So, if you have pool side service or room service, ask if there are any hidden costs. This story is why I prefer to recommend the Blue Ginger and the other places in Lanai City. Support the Local owners!Blue Ginger has great pastries you can take back to your room for breakfast and the Cafe 565 has good sub sandwiches.

When we arrived in Lanai, we picked up our rental Jeep and stopped by the gocery store right away and stocked up on bottled water and groceries. Hey, some people might feel embarassed going into the 4S with groceries, but who cares? AND, it%26#39;s a plus because the bellman takes it all to the room for you!

That was one of the smartest things we did. We loved having cold bottled water in our fridge at all times, and it felt good to not have to eat rich food at every meal. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a banana is sometimes is exactly what you want, and it%26#39;s right there whenever you want it.

We%26#39;d have a big breakfast at the 4S each day, grab a snack in our room in the mid-afternoon, then have a nice dinner at different places.

Now, the groceries there are expensive - you might be a bit shocked - but it%26#39;s a lot less than buying lunch or snacks at the hotel.

The question is, if you aren%26#39;t renting a Jeep, how do you go grocery shopping? Not sure, maybe you could use the shuttle - that%26#39;s a question for a real expert like Dr. V. Or, rent the Jeep on day 2 and get groceries after doing the Munro Trail. And before you go to Shipwreck Beach. You can%26#39;t go to Lanai without doing some offroading! ;-)

yes, I did the same, and it%26#39;s well worth it to try and save.

Both my stays on Lana`i racked up more costs for food and drink than for the room (but I got a good rate).

As was said, there is nothing whatsoever near Manele, so you have to plan to take care of your needs on a trip up to town. You might want to take a nice tote bag with you so as to avoid the look of walking in with bags of groceries.

If you have a rental car, it%26#39;s easy. If you take the shuttle, the tote bag or even backpack will be helpful.

When I went to the Manele, pre 4S takeover, they had honor bar mini fridges rather than empty fridges. I don%26#39;t know or care what housekeeping thinks of me, but I immediately take all the stuff out of those, stow it as best I can, put my own stuff in, and replace the honor bar goodies when I leave, untouched.

I always buy my own water and non-alcoholic drinks at the store, and take them with me to the beach or on walks/outings.

As far as I know, all the cheap places to eat are on the town square in Lana`i, so you can just check them out. The dining room at the Lana`i Hotel is expensive but worth checking out, to see where Lana`i residents go out to dinner.

Warning, I had possibly the worst burrito ever at the Filipino hole in the wall there (forget the name). I should have known better than to order a burrito, but I%26#39;m not a fan of Filipino food and it was the only thing open at the time. The intestinal ';effects'; from this thing lasted for two days. ;-)

On both my stays at the Lodge I went up to the Golf clubhouse for lunch. The one at Manele is nice too. The hotel runs shuttles to both, and the one at the Lodge is a pleasant walk. One has ocean view, the other forest view.

Don%26#39;t know it the 4S has changed the Lodge clubhouse, but they made a grilled cheese sandwich with fresh basil and tomato on sourdough that was possibly the best I%26#39;ve ever had, paired with a glass of their house white.

Anyone, are they still using Edna Valley Paragon as their house white?

Lastly, if they%26#39;re still serving English style tea at the Lodge in the afternoon, do stop by. Lots of great tea varieties and pastries, all you want, and when I was there it was absolutely free for guests of either hotel. Not diet food, but you%26#39;re on vacation.

By the way, it is roasting hot at the Manele in July, so going up to Lana`i City and the Lodge is a very pleasant reprieve from the heat and humidity in the afternoon. You go straight from SoCal to NoCal coastal climate in one short drive ...

KK, not sure what the house white is, sorry.

We also stock up at the Lana%26#39;i City grocery stores (either Pine Island Market or Richard%26#39;s). It is nice with the empty fridge in the room. It is very easy to carry a couple of gracery bags back in the shuttle, people do it all the time.

The breakfast buffet will fill you up at Manele Bay, but it is not cheap. If you got the package with breakfast included, be aware the tax and tip are no longer covered in the package, and are your responsibility. Otherwise you could skip the $60+ breakfast for two, eat some light snacks in your room and have a very filling $20 lunch for two in town.

%26gt;%26gt;KK, not sure what the house white is, sorry.

LOL, well as the new LE you should hele on back there and do this research. You probably don%26#39;t order the house wine.

Actually I don%26#39;t either, as a rule, is usually not very drinkable, but I was impressed by how Castle %26amp; Cooke chose a quite decent varietal for their house white, instead of the usual dreck.

So the Four Seasons offers empty fridges? That%26#39;s a nice touch.

KK, you might want to be careful with that unloading the minibar practice, a lot of hotels now charge via an electronic system that detects when an item is removed! :-)

At least in the past few years, at every FS property I%26#39;ve ever stayed instead of minibars they offer empty fridges which you can have them customize for you before/during your stay. While I don%26#39;t think I would feel right going into a FS with bags and bags of groceries, I do often bring my own bottles of wine (I have never met a house wine I liked, and I blanch at the markup on wine at restaurants/hotels, I%26#39;d rather pay a corkage fee and get exactly what I want) and sometimes fruit or balance bars. I tend not to eat lunch as a meal. I prefer to eat a few healthy snacks throughout the day and then save all the money for dinner :-)

I thought the upscale restaurant at Manele Bay (Italian...I can%26#39;t recall the name..Ihilani?) and the breakfast room service was very good. I did not enjoy the Lodge lunch or dinner dining although I know many people think the Lodge restaurant is fabulous. It wasn%26#39;t my thing.

  • Oahu Hotels

My husband and I are going to Oahu from 4/19/08 to 4/26/08. We have a free 4 night stay at Oahu East Hotel with the option to upgrade to the Wyland Waikiki. Any comments or suggestions?

We also have to figure out where to stay for the other 3 nights we%26#39;re going to be there. Does anyone have suggestions on a reasonably priced hotel or condo?

    Oahu Hotels

    hi

do you mean the ohana east hotel? the wyland was renovated last year or so but have not stayed there. the ohana east is pretty centrally located in waikiki.we stay at the royal grove hotel a small family owned place it is very cheap by waikiki standards but is not for everyone it is old but clean and has no bells and whistles[lol] like some of the hotels in waikiki but it makes hawaii affordable for us we went last year for the first time and are returning in sept.check into resortquest they have some reasonable hotel and condo properties in waikiki,we looked at the resortquest waikiki circle and also celebrity resorts waikiki is very reasonable, but decided to give the royal grove a try and are glad we did.if we wanted acondo i would give the waikiki banyan or the waikiki sunset a try both of these are resortquest properties and you can also rent thru vrbo too which could be cheaper

    good luck marie

    Oahu Hotels

We never stayed at the Wyland-but heard good comments about it from the locals-we were in Waikiki area last week. It has been renovated, and is,or about to open-you may get a deal, contact them on the net.It is onLewer street-just off the main drag-there are lots of good eateries there, you willbe a block from the famous Halekulani on the beach.

    Moana Surfrider vs Sheraton Waikiki

We are staying at the Sheraton Waikiki and getting a good rate using Starwood points. Do you guys think it is worth it to stay at the Moana Surfrider and paying an extra $100/night for 4 nights? Is the difference between the two properties worth an extra $400 for the 4 nights we%26#39;ll be in Honolulu? Thanks in advance for all replies.

    Moana Surfrider vs Sheraton Waikiki

I am just bumping this up since I saw this on the Maui boards as well. I hope someone helps. I don%26#39;t know much about Oahu to be giving advice but I would stay at the Sheraton Waikiki between those 2 choices.

    Moana Surfrider vs Sheraton Waikiki

I haven%26#39;t stayed at either, (we stay in between at the RH) but $400 seems like a lot of spending/dining money to me. If you have an ocean view on a high floor at the Sheraton, it is pretty amazing.

To me it is definitely worth it-we just returned from the Moana Surfrider-this was ou 5th.stay there. I just love the hotel, the lobby, the courtyard under the 150+ year old banyan tree, over looking the beautiful waikiki beach, drinking tropical drink-is worth the extra money-at least that is my take on it. We have stayed at the Royal Hawaiian, the Hyatt Regency, but I prefer this one over the others now.Whether or not you stay there or not, please go there, have a drink at the Beach Bar, or may be Kona Coffeee(?).Have a good time,

    Return Trip Feb 2009

My b/f and I went to Maui Oct 07 and stayed 5 wonderful nights at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villa%26#39;s on the $750 promo deal.

We recently became owners and get to reserve the Westin Kaanaplia Ocean Resort Villas NORTH one year in advance. We decided to spend next valentines day (week) in Maui so decided Feb 8th to the 15th.

Yesterday put that date exactly 12 months away and I submitted our request for those dates!

I%26#39;m SOoooo excited to being planning our ';return'; trip and this time with family.

We have a 2 bd lockoff unit in the new North building and we are taking our 2 five year old sons (who%26#39;ll be 6 then) and also both my mom and my b/f%26#39;s mom will be joining us! I can%26#39;t wait to share the Maui experience with the kids and our mom%26#39;s. Since we got to see most the island on our last trip this on will probably mostly be spent at the resort and just enjoying the beach teaching the kids to snorkel.

Can anyone tell me what Feb is like in Maui, weather, crowds and such? I%26#39;ve been twice, once in early Dec 06 and then early Oct 07. Both times the island was very quiet and enjoyable with little to no crowds and GREAT weather compared to the frosty temps of the Pacific Northwest at this time of year.

Also, what is good for 6 year olds to keep them busy and having fun?

    thanks

    Return Trip Feb 2009

Feb is whale seasons so thats a plus but it is also rainy season. The 6 years old will be fine in the pool at the Westin! You can also type in activities with kids on the Maui forums and many previous posts will come up.

    Return Trip Feb 2009

Different vibe in Febuary-smaller crowds-nice weather but a little less warm than in july.

I%26#39;m in in july of this year

    love the villas

We just returened from the Westin Resort %26amp; Spa-it was rather windy, had several sunny-part-sunny days-and one rainy day-I would take that anytime over 45 below zero-wind chill.Have fun,

Excluding the summer months, February is the busiest time on Maui. All due to the whales!! You will find larger crowds than you did in early Dec. and Oct. It is also the rainy season, so plan for that. You will have great luck teaching your sons to snorkel up at Kapalua Bay. Much better than Kaanapali. Take them to the Maui Ocean Center. There they can learn the names of the fish they see snorkeling!! Make sure both grandma%26#39;s have some time to see Maui outside of Kaanapali!! We have had some cooler weather lately. Plan on temps being in the 75-80 degrees.

Muliwai Trail - Closed or Open

Anyone been out to the Waipi`o Valley Overlook recently? If so, did you happen to notice if the board was reporting Muliwai Trail (over to Waimanu) as open or closed? I%26#39;ve been getting conflicting reports (go figure).

And is it me or is that sign new altogether? A friend sent a photo of it to me from last year. But I%26#39;ve never noticed it before. Maybe I%26#39;m blind and was missing it.

Mahalo for any info on this. I may just have to call DLNR or Na Ala Hele for the details.

Muliwai Trail - Closed or Open

Just going to bump this up one last time and see if anyone can provide a heads up. Mahalo

    JC,

My picture is 5 months old (9/1/07), which means it might be closed now. It has rained an awful lot recently, which could lead to the trail being closed.

    Hotel Renew or Hawaii Prince?

We%26#39;re in Honolulu for 3 nights in August and can%26#39;t decide between these two hotels. Quite different I know, but both appeal for different reasons. Prince , for the views, bit quieter, near malls, and Hotel Renew for nice boutique feel, and all new rooms. Anyone got any thoughts? Are the rooms in the Prince very outdated? That might sway me?

    Hotel Renew or Hawaii Prince?

I think you have about covered it.

Hawaii Prince is on the Ala Moana side of Waikiki. It is close to Ala Moana Shopping Center. About a 15-20 minute walk to the center of Waikiki. It overlooks Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. Closet beaches are a few minutes away, Ala Moana Beach %26amp; the beach at Hilton Hawaiian Village (Duke Kahanamoku Beach) %26amp; Ft DeRussy Beach.

Hotel Renew is about 1/2 block from the beach on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. It is near Kapiolani Park. It is behind Resortquest Waikiki Beach Hotel. Its about 10 minutes to center of Waikiki.

    Lots of info:

    Hotel Renew or Hawaii Prince?

If you want any sort of view at the Renew you%26#39;re going to have to pay extra for it. We had a lovely view of a parking garage.

We recently stayed on the fourth floor of the hotel renew, we too had a view of the parking garage, however we were very happy with the service provided. We stayed in a room with a comfortable queen size bed and a new flat screen tv and were very happy with the continental breakfast they served. I would stay here again for the right price and but I would not pay extra to have a balcony, as you cannot see anything but grey concrete while seated!

    Anyone stayed at Kihei Resort?

I have already booked a condo at the Kihei Resort after talking with the owner, through VRBO, but I%26#39;m wondering if anyone has ever stayed at these condos. They are the ones located at 777 S. Kihei Road, not the Kihei Beach Resort. Thanks.

    Anyone stayed at Kihei Resort?

Do you have a vrbo number?

    Anyone stayed at Kihei Resort?

    Yes, it%26#39;s 144806.

I looked at a property there for purchase, but didn%26#39;t actually stay there. The grounds are really nice, very quiet and tranquil. The units are mostly owner occupied but they do allow vacation rentals, as well. The unit I saw was very nice-a spacious kitchen by Maui standards. The location isn%26#39;t the greatest as far as being able to walk to a lot of different restaurants, shops, etc and I didn%26#39;t care for the beach, especially for swimming, as much as I do the South Kihei beaches.

I spoke with an owner there %26amp; almost rented but went to Kihei Beach Resort for an ocean front view, instead. Kihei Resort appeared to be a nice property %26amp; very lush. I think you%26#39;ll be fine as long as you know you probably don%26#39;t have a view of the ocean.

Thanks for the info; I%26#39;m not too worried about an ocean view since I plan to spend more time out and about than at the condo. It sounds from what you all have said that the condo should be very nice. Thanks again.

  • Does Sirius radio work?

Does anyone know if Sirius satellite radios work in Maui. I am interested in taking my portable one with me and using it in the room or on the beach. Does anyone know or have you had any luck using it?.

    Does Sirius radio work?

I don%26#39;t think so. I know they applied for a permit to build a repeater in Hawaii (and Alaska) but have yet to be granted one. Guess you will just have to settle for listening to IZ on cd%26#39;s.

Do they ususally come to Maui shores?

Thank you very much for this thread and link!

We were in Waikiki last week on the days the jellyfish were predicted. I was concerned but they did not show up this go round. We snorkled and swam and had no problems.

    Thank you! :0)

    Thanks for posting.

Does anyone know how accurate this calendar is?

Maui does not have the problems with the box jelly fish. It seems it is only on Oahu.

Are the Box Jellyfish mainly on the Waikiki beaches? Or does this refer to the whole Island?

mrsfuzz, haven%26#39;t seen you much lately. My husand and I will be on Maui on March18-25th. So looking forward to it. Still hoping to try that Mango brule%26#39;. And fish tacos!

Pattie, In the link on the right side ';Box Jellyfish Information %26amp; Treatment'; it states the following:

Box jellyfish, Carybdea alata and Carybdea rastonii, regularly swarm to Hawaii%26#39;s Leeward shores 9 to 10 days after the full moon. Affected areas include Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana Beach Park, as well as Hanauma Bay, and may also include ocean areas and beach front up to and including the Wai`anae Coast.

The calendar is amazingly accurate, they usually last about 2 days and the lifeguards will post signs so if you are there at that time, just schedule something else.

How easy is it to use taxis in Waikiki? Because of limitions on the distance my granddaughter can walk, We would like to be able to take a taxi from the Reef to Dukes for example. Thanks

    taxis

It is easy to take cabs in Waikiki.

But, maybe you can rent a wheelchair for the time you are on Oahu. There are some companies that deliver to your hotel room.

Duke%26#39;s is about 4 blocks from Outrigger Reef.

If none of the above work out, I rented a regular wheelchair for my mother at Apria Healthcare (808)485-0178. But this was in Pearl City where I lived at the time.

Also if you plan to drive, bring your handicap placard as Hawaii honors those from other states.

    Possible to Purchase Shark Oil?

    Hello,

I will be returning to Hawaii for the second time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to Hawaii solo in July 07 and feel in love with Hawaii. I will be returning in April......2 months and counting down.

I have a friend who has lupus and uses Shark Oil, since Hawaii is surrounded by oceans. It is possible that I can find and purchase Shark oil in Hawaii. I will be staying in Oahu....

    Thanks in advance.

    Possible to Purchase Shark Oil?

Check Chinatown in Honolulu..but quite frankly sharks are respected and revered (and in a few cases feared)...so I would doubt it.

    Our booking changed!

In October we booked a 3 bed townhouse at Puamana near Lainha, paid the deposit and signed the contract. Now 6 weeks before we go we%26#39;ve been told we have been %26#39;upgraded%26#39; to another property at no extra cost. This alternate property is just yards away is shown as more expensive and looks fine but there are 2 things that niggle:

First it is a single storey. On the original we had a first floor master bedroom with full length windows and balcony overlooking the sea. We loved this idea and it was a big deal for us. Now we have a master bedroom with small windows overlooking the garden - not the same. The sea view is from the living area.

Secondly we are now required to pay an additional %26#39;security deposit%26#39; of $1,000. Obviously can expect to get this back but it leaves our account for 6-8 weeks and we hadn%26#39;t budgeted for it.

I realise there is probably nothing I can do, and a quick search tells me we%26#39;re not going to find an alternative we want this late so I guess this post is just to let off steam.............!

    Our booking changed!

Something doesn%26#39;t sound right about this to me - I%26#39;d review your contract and see if they aren%26#39;t violating it. Maybe you could get out of it and find something else - I sure wouldn%26#39;t pay an additional $1000 for something that you hadn%26#39;t requested.

    Our booking changed!

There is no way in hell I would settle for that. I would look over the contract and raise a stink about it. An ocean view is much different than a garden view even if it is more listed as more expensive.

I DEFINITELY wouldn%26#39;t be paying any more deposit than you agreed to with the first place.

So are you clear on what exactly the ';upgrade'; entails???? Sounds like it isn%26#39;t. Is this from an owner or thru and agency?

no way would i give an extra dollar or euro for this ';upgrade'; can you turn it down and stay withthe original booking------it smells to me - if you cant keep the original booking i would cancel and find another place

Seems this is in violation of contract. You rented House A, not House B. What reason is given? Is there a problem with House A that makes it uninhabitable? In that case, you are fortunate the rentor found you a nice substitute.

The additional damage deposit is also not what was contracted. (Although there shouldn%26#39;t be any real loss if this is on a credit chit to be destroyed when you depart. If a charge went through for $1000 you%26#39;d lose, what, about $5 in interest?)

Please do tell us if you rented via an agency or an owner and how the damage deposit is secured.

The agency say the owner has now %26#39;booked%26#39; the property! The contract small print says they cannot absolutely guarantee the exact property - I did see this before I signed!

From the pictures the upgrade is probably more expensive furniture and bathroom and kitchen fittings - not what I%26#39;m looking for!

I would love to find an alternative but we go in 6 weeks and my partner is set on the Puamana site, so I%26#39;m looking, but not hopeful!

You probably have been shafted with little alternative at this late date. At least post the name of the property so others are warned.

Thanks folks for the feedback. I did manage to find an alternate property and although I have to pay a little more I feel good about taking my business elsewhere.

The agents can probably say they acted within the letter of the contract - although their behaviour was shabby imo - so I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s appropriate to name them or the unit?

    The agents can probably say they acted within the letter of the contract - although their behaviour was shabby imo - so I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s appropriate to name them or the unit%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

i personally believe that it is appropriate so that other posters on this board do not fall into the same situation as you have -- glad you got out and found another location

we post good and bad reviews of restaurants- car rentals and everything else so imo its ok to post the info

Definitely appropriate to name them. And I%26#39;d never pay a $1000 deposit because they switched places.

  • Car hire in maui

i am in maui in july staying at the hyatt we were not initially thinking of hiring a car but reading the forum it seems to be a god idea.Any ideas where to hire and from whom would be grately appreciated .

    Car hire in maui

any of the major car companies --- budget and alamo are usually the cheapest of the major companies- you can do it on line --- they have shuttle service from the airport to the carpark a few minutes away

    Car hire in maui

You WILL need a car. We have had great luck with Avis, very fast and efficient after reserving on line, Alamo and Ecomomy...not so much! I get testy after standing in line for an hour.

A year ago we realized that we had left out carryon with ALL of our confirmations at the Avis desk! 6 people traveling together...too much luggage etc. They arranged for a taxi to deliver the case to our condo. It was amazing! Pricey, but still saved me a 45 minute drive, each way, back to the airport! Really GREAT customer service

    Nite Owl T Shirts

We have friends renewing their wedding vows on Kauai this week. We wrer unable to attand so I wanted to give them a gift. Flowers had been taken care of by others so we decided to give T shirts. I contacted Nite Owl T Shirts who could not have been more helpful.

They delivered the T shirts as requested and also included 2 gift cards with messages from ourselves and a congratulations from them.

It is lovely to deal with a company who are so friendly and courteous.

    Thumbs up to them!!

    Nite Owl T Shirts

We have been buying t-shirts from them for years. A friend of a friend needed a very large size (5XL) and I called them from the mainland. They shipped a couple of them to me for a nominal charge. We always stop in there to see what new designs they may have and they are always very nice.

    beach theft

How does a couple go swimming/snorkeling and leave their personal items?

I thought, oh we will lock them in the car.

    Then I keep reading...

Don%26#39;t leave anything in the car.

So where do you put your stuff?

    Oahu in 5 weeks...

    beach theft

Leave your things in the trunk so no one can see. Even towels. I know what you mean though, car keys, money, credit cards, etc? I use one of those, supposedly waterproof small containers. But be sure and use a plastic bag with a zip also, cause the containers are not 100% waterproof.

This also goes for when you are shopping. Do not leave shopping bags in back seat of car where it can be seen. Always put things in trunk.

Best to be sure than sorry. Most likely nothing will happen, especially if you are careful.

    beach theft

Don%26#39;t leave anything in your trunk. Out of sight is not out of mind, theives will break in just to see if there is anything there.

Get an Aqua Pak or some other waterproof plastic bag/pouch to put your cash, credit cards etc in then take it with you into the water.

    hi

i got my husband some swim trunks last year for our trip and they came with this great little double zipped pouch when we wanted to go to beach he just put the room key and a little cash in it and put it in the pocket of his swim trunks that buttoned up it kept everything dry we also got acheap disposable camera to bring down to the beach so we did%26#39;nt have to worry about our digital.

    aloh amarie

We left things in our trunk, but we put them in the trunk before we got to that location. We didn%26#39;t pull into the parking lot, open the trunk, put a bunch of valuable stuff in there, etc. while people could watch us.

We also didn%26#39;t park in remote locations where no one would be around. Busier parking lots are less attractive to thieves than remote, isolated ones.

When we went to Hanauma Bay we used their lock boxes for my husband%26#39;s wallet, the car keys, etc. We also used one of the waterproof packs for our camera when we were around water. We bought the cheap disposable waterproof cameras for use when snorkeling and they took decent pictures.

Our hotel room had a safe which we used, as well.

It didn%26#39;t really seem possible to never leave anything in the car. Some things just can%26#39;t be taken into the water when you swim, snorkel, surf, etc.

Use lots of common sense and you should be good.

    Thanks guys!

I am feeling a whole lot better!

I am so glad that Hanamau Bay has lockers!

    Great tipz, thanks

Invest in a couple of Aquapacs - we use the Keymaster - avaiable at www.aquapac.com and maybe on Ebay. We each carry a credit card, license, and about $25-30. Everything else of any value stays at home.

How Early Should We Leave for Honolulu Airport

We will be staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village and leaving there this Saturday for a 10 am flight to Maui. We have ground transportation scheduled, but wondered how much time we should allow for travel, and getting through security. Thank you for your help.

How Early Should We Leave for Honolulu Airport

Which airline are you flying with? I%26#39;ve noticed that this makes a big difference. I%26#39;ve flown Hawaiian and if you catch it at a bad time, the lines to check in can be very long, but security has always been quick. I%26#39;ve flown Go also, and since they go through the old interisland terminal, I%26#39;ve never had to wait. I would say 20-30 minutes from HHV to airport.

How Early Should We Leave for Honolulu Airport

1/2 hour to drive to the airport + however long your airline recommends you be there for the Maui flight.

simi .... with ground transportation scheduled, most likely with a airport shuttle, you have no choice to wonder how much time you would need and allow yourself for travel to the airport and to check through security. Airport shuttles will pick you up as much as 3 1/2 hours before your flight time, regardless, if you are early or late.

Hawaii%26#39;s interisland airlines request that you check in NLT 1 hour if you have carry ons, 1 1/2 hrs if checking in bags.

With a 10 am flight to Maui and I was not using the airport shuttle, I would leave the hotel NLT 9:30 am.

    Hope this helps ....

Sorry, I should have mentioned the airline - we are flying Hawaiian Air. Thanks again.

Honlulu is a big airport and frankly I would not want to miss my flight, if the airlines reccomend two hours then I would be there two hours before flight time.

Just remember, while checking-in early and having to wait at the airport for a couple hours for a flight isn%26#39;t pleasant, it%26#39;s a better option than missing the flight.

I would go with 1 1/2 to 2, I think at 10 it should not be too busy, most flights are in the 8-9 time or the 12-2 time.

In the past they would just put you on the next flight so it didn%26#39;t really matter too much, but they do not seem to do that anymore.

';With a 10 am flight to Maui ...... I would leave NLT 9:30 am';, I meant it to be NLT 9:00 am. Twenty or so minutes to airport and 90 minutes before boarding.

JUST A NOTE: For all of you boarding Hawaiian Airlines and you do not want to stand in line, go directly to the ';Hawaiian Airlines Drive-Thru'; open from 6 am to 4 pm on the ground level outside the baggage claim area in the ';Permittee Parking'; lot mountain side of the building. Not everyone knows about this convenience check in. Lines are very minimum (I have stand in line at the most three people) and if you driving your own or a rental car, you may leave the car where you have parked in one of three stalls and go check in without having the security guards tell you to ';move on';. This is one of the highlights for me using Hawaiian on my trips to the mainland. Sorry, no international check in%26#39;s.

    Giv%26#39;um a try ......

    Hi Islakane

Thanks for this hint...but is it only for trips to the mainland? We are flying Hawaiian Air to Maui at 10:00 on a Monday morning. Can we still use this nice line?

    Thanks.

Print your boarding passes at the Hilton. Most decent hotels will do that for you now for free; if not buy time in the business center if it has a printer and do it the day before. Be sure to indicate your checked bags if it asks. We printed our interisland passes on Hawaiian and then just had to check the bags...shorter line. And we were ';checked in'; well before the flight :-)

    Allerton Garden tour times?

Just wanted to check on what times/how often the guided tours are done at Allerton Garden? My guidebook lists the phone number, but not a website to get additional info. Just wondering if anyone knew more info. about times, etc.

    thanks!

    Allerton Garden tour times?

    Try this web address:

    www.ntbg.org/gardens/allerton-tours.php

    Allerton Garden tour times?

Thanks for the link -- for some reason, the first time I tried to google it, it said the website didn%26#39;t exist . . . but wow, the prices have gone up to $40. For those that have been -- is it worth the cost? I know it is a lot less than other excursions and I would love to see the beautiful flora -- I just don%26#39;t know how excited DH will be about it:-)

Don%26#39;t know your hubby%26#39;s back ground, and you could take the tour on your own if you indeed wanted to tour the gardens.

I went along with Erica, the first time, because she wanted to go...and now have been twice over the years. Tesecond time was quite a few years later, and I was all for it.

Very interesting and enjoyable. I am not a botanist, nor flower and plant grower. Check out my profile, and you will understand.

Both of us absolutely enjoyed the Allerton Botanical Gardens guided tour. Part tram, part easy walking, all excellent.

They have several tours each day, beginning in the morning to mid afternoon....I believe. Give them a call and talk to them and select what is convenient to you.

As far as the $ 40.00. Our attitude is if we are on vacation, and we want to do something we just flat do it. Providing it is worth it to us.

We just spent money for airfare, and lodging and rental car, and travled a fairly long way. To not do something that we want to experience and only costs $ 40.00 does not seem to compute.

Your choice of course, and we do fully understand that we all do not think or do things the same way.

    Denny

I think we%26#39;ll do it. The $80 isn%26#39;t a huge amount (and certainly much cheaper than other activities). I just wondered if it was worth the time, etc. Anyways, I would love to get some great shots of the various trees, plants, and flowers -- so I%26#39;m putting it on our agenda (I%26#39;m the main vacation planner in the family).

    thanks for the input!

    Bunecca,

Yes indeed you will have plenty of photo opportunities.

If you saw Jurrasic Park I, one of my favorites is standing at the butress roots of the large trees that were in the movie. Those roots are monsters and great for getting pictures of you to take back to the mainland. Impressive !

Also, one of the scenes from Donovans Reef ( one of my favorite John Wayne films) was filmed there.

Honestly, it really is neat, quite interesting, and we had a fun lady docent as a guide. She is a wealth of knowledge, and it will not be boring.

If you need a late lunch afterward, you might relax and enjoy the tropical south pacific ambiance of Keokies Paadise in the Poipu Shopping Village.

(Maybe a 6 minute drive from Allerton Gardens.)

Oh, you will also be near spouting horn, so if a swell us running , you can spend a few minutes at the lookout and get some photos of the ocean gyser like spray shooting thru the lava tube into the air.

(About a 1 minute drive from allerton gardens.)

Should be a very pleasant day, non hurried, and just totally a feel good experience.

    Denny

Yes, Benecca, the tour is worth the $40. It%26#39;s not just what you see ~ but the narration of the tour. What I learned about the history of the gardens and valley ~ can%26#39;t put a dollar amount on that:)

Also, Denny, I recently watched Donovan%26#39;s Reef because I know it%26#39;s one of your favorite movies. I THOUGHT I recognized the gardens in that movie! Thanks for confirming that ~

    jc (in hb)

I was going to ask this question and glad to see that it will be a good place to visit.

We will be coming in May and want to visit south side of island for a day or two before heading to north. Old Koloa, Poipu Beach, not sure what else just yet - - narrowing the list down at this point.

Donavan%26#39;s Reef, which scene? The ceremony?

Donavan%26#39;s Reef, which scene? The ceremony?

I%26#39;m not sure exactly ~ but I THINK it%26#39;s where the character played by Caesar Romero lives. The house he%26#39;s sitting in front of. I think that%26#39;s where Queen Emma used to live in Lawai Beach/Bay, which is on the tour ~

    jc

I read somewhere that once a month it is free to the public - Is there any way to find the day in March that it will be free?
