Barefoot Bar

Hi - I%26#39;ve been reading posts in preparation for our trip to Waikiki in March. One of the recommendations I%26#39;ve read for keeping meal costs low is to eat at the Barefoot Bar at the Hale Koa.

Since this is a military hotel, how can guests get onto the grounds to get to this bar? Is it just a place one can walk up to on the beach or do you have to show some form of id to get through the complex? Also, is it open for all meals or just lunch? Any help will be appreciated, we are staying at the HHV and the restaurants there are very pricey. Thanks.

Have a great stay on the Islands of Hawaii...

Barefoot Bar

Pat, we stayed at HHV and also ate there. Right next

door, towards Diamond Head. It is right on beach.

Good for hamburgers, fries, etc, and cheap drinks. sometimes had music. You don%26#39;t need ID. I think all the places inside you need ID. A lot cheaper than

HHV. Also try the coffe house across the street. Not on beach but good, inexpensive food especially for breakfast. Have a grsat trip. we loved the HHV

Technically you need a military ID, they don%26#39;t ask often but they can. Yes it is just off the beach however since they don%26#39;t pay taxes to the state and are exempt from state law it is not public.

I guess you decide, even if others are doing it that in itself does not mean it is right to do so. The Hale Koa is for military members and retirees.

Coastin - thank you for your kind words but I am not in the active military - my husband was a looong time ago. Didn%26#39;t mean to give you the wrong impression.

Brighton Bill - I%26#39;ve seen many postings recommending this Bar for inexpensive meals so i didn%26#39;t consider the fact that it might be unethical to do so. Guess I will look elsewhere

Sorry Pat I didn%26#39;t mean to come across that way. It isn%26#39;t really a question of ethics it is more a question of if you are sitting there having a meal or a drink and do get asked for an ID would you be ok not having one. As I said many people do just wander in from the beach and the odds of being asked are probably 10,000 to one but they could ask. They certainly do not need the money, the Hale Koa is self sufficient and no tax money goes to it at all,.

Pat, we actually didn%26#39;t know it was a part of the hotel when we first went in. We were just looking for some place on the beach to have a quick bite.

They did not ask us for ID. According the the Oahu Revealed book, they recommended it for anyone!!!

We were told it was open to the public by other nono-guests who enjoyed it. There is no signage saying differently. Yes, you just walk in right off the beach. We went there several nights in a row and everyone was very welcoming (waitresses). It was obvious we were not hotel guests.

If it is NOT OK to go there, I wish they would post that... because we had a great time... but I%26#39;m tired of getting scolded on this forum for going there. I am not the kind of person to sneak into places where I don%26#39;t belong.

At the foot of the white sands of Fort DeRussy Beach is the Hale Koa Hotel Barefoot Bar. Aptly named because of its proximity to the Hale Koa swimming pool and Waikiki beach, no shoes are required. Picture Tom Cruise in the movie Cocktail and you%26#39;ll have a perfect blueprint of the layout. One final detail, the Barefoot Bar is a military and invited guests establishment. If you%26#39;re in the service and need a place to feel at ease and enjoy some R%26amp;R, leave your shoes at home and drop in. -- GDM (Photo: Beth L. Aweau)
