What is your favorite beach on Oahu? We%26#39;ll be there March 4-9. I%26#39;m hoping there are some lesser known/less crowded beaches we could explore. Thanks!
Beach recommendations besides Waikiki?
Depends what you%26#39;re looking for. Swimming, surfing/bodyboarding, snorkeling, sunbathing, picnicking, fishing, etc. Each beach has it%26#39;s pros and cons. Where are you staying and how far are you willing to walk/drive?
Beach recommendations besides Waikiki?
Ala Moana Beach Park - Just across the bridge from Waikiki
Waimanalo Bay Recreation Area - This is the same strand of white sand beach as Lanikai Beach, Kailua Beach %26amp; Bellows Beach. Bellows Beach is right next to Waimanalo Bay Recreation Area. It is open to the public on weekends.
Sunset Beach on North Shore - Though popular, it is never crowded.
San Souci Beach - This is still in Waikiki, but is less crowded than others. Located by Waikiki Aquarium. Has a great view of Waikiki.

I know of lots of beaches that are lesser known/less crowded. But I%26#39;d rather not waste time typing a list of every remote beach if the OP wants to stay near Waikiki. And some beaches are great for sunbathing but never have waves so they wouldn%26#39;t be fun for someone that wants to try bodyboarding. I think a request for more information so that the response will be more helpful is perfectly reasonable.
We will be staying in Waikiki but would like to rent a car and explore the island more for one or two days. Looking for beaches to swim, sunbathe, and possibly bodysurf. Not sure if North shore beaches will be safe at this time yet.
Thanks for your info, Dusty!
Bellows Beach
just to say Waimanalo is stunning :0)
If you are going to rent a car you should take a trip to the North Shore. It would be really fun to go through Haleiwa and visit the famous beaches like Sunset, etc. The waves may still be rough in March but if you stay near the beach where the waves break you should be fine.
Going to Kailua and Lanikai is also nice, parking can be a factor near Lanikai as parking is almost non-existing.
I personally like Makapuu, the waves are a little rough but not nearly as bad as the North Shore. The waves are relatively strong but that is the beauty of Hawaii, you really feel nature. Just don%26#39;t go too far out or the waves can pull you out. The views at Makapuu are amazing also. You see Rabbit island and the a lighthouse. Beach is nice too. Makapuu is right across from the Sea Life Park.
Once you get out of waikiki, nothing will be crowded, I love the north shore beaches- in my opinion the most scenic in all hawaii. Kailua are also has some great places.
Ala Moana is a great swimming/sunbathing beach (no waves) that is close to Waikiki and will not be crowded if you go on a weekday. It%26#39;s very popular with local families and fills up fast on weekends and holidays.
Lanikai and Kailua Beach Park are very scenic and usually have good bodysurfing-size waves (2 to 4 feet). It can get a bit too windy here sometimes. Check the weather report. It%26#39;s perfect when the trade winds are 10-15 mph or less. These beaches are also very popular with local families.
Sandy Beach is great for bodysurfing when the waves aren%26#39;t too big. If the waves get bigger than 4 feet, the shore break will pound you. This is a popular beach with teenagers, so it might fill up in the afternoon when school is out. There aren%26#39;t any stores nearby, so bring all your food/drinks/supplies with you.
