My wife and I like to hike. We are planning on going for a few hikes on Oahu during our 9 day stay. Should we do the Hike to the Dragons Nostrils up to Makapuu Point? Also, will we be able to see Whales from up there in early March. Lastly, I have heard that there is a lighthouse down below. Is there any way or trail to get down to it or is the Lighthouse off Limits to tourists.
Thanks in advance
Makapuu Hike to Dragons Nostrils
The lighthouse itself is off limits. Though I do occasionally see people walking around the lighthouse.
Near the lighthouse there is a trail that goes to the lighthouse that says keep out or something like that. The main trail continues above the lighthouse.
Best place to see whales is from the main trail. As soon as you turn toward the lighthouse, there will be a small lookout %26amp; sign telling about the humpback whales. Stop there for about 15 minutes %26amp; scan the ocean. This will be about 2/3 of the way from the parking lot to the lighthouse.
I have not been to Dragon%26#39;s Nostril. The trail to Dragon%26#39;s Nostril starts somewhere near the humpback whale sign or near where the trail splits to go above the lighthouse. It isn%26#39;t marked %26amp; may be hard to find.
Makapuu Hike to Dragons Nostrils
The trail to the Dragons Nostrils(if you can call it a trail) starts near the whale watching sign. It looks like a gully heading down the cliff. It is more of a scramble up and down the cliff. There are white arrows painted on the rock, but you can%26#39;t really see them until you are going back up. So going down is kind of a guess if you haven%26#39;t done it before. Unless there is a really good swell for them to work it probably isn%26#39;t worth the effort. When they are on though it is quite incredible.
