Mauna Kea condo vs. Kohala Ranch home

We are planning a trip to the big Island in April. We are contemplating on staying at a condo: The Ridge at Waiulaula at Mauna Kea vs. a beautiful home on the Kohala Ranch. What do you think? What is the construction like at the Mauna Kea now? Is it loud?

Thanks

Mauna Kea condo vs. Kohala Ranch home

I would stay at the Mauna Kea. You will be in a resort environment and you can use the shuttle to go over to the Prince if you want to. Kohala Ranch is more isolated and higher elevation too.

Mauna Kea condo vs. Kohala Ranch home

Kohala Ranch has beautiful homes but is also a dry dusty area except for the top, which is colder. It goes all the way from near sea level to near 3000 feet elevation, so I would need an address to guess at the climate there.

I was told the construction at Mauna Kea would be quite loud, by the people who work there, but I haven%26#39;t heard it for myself, nor do I know how close the condo would be. Waiulaula area is north of the hotel, and it%26#39;s the southern part of the hotel that was damaged.

Are they the same price, and do they both have their own pools?

I wouldn%26#39;t stay at Kohala Ranch without a pool, BUT be aware that unheated pools are frigid ... so if a pool is part of the attraction, find out what temp it%26#39;s kept at.

Kohala Ranch is quite remote, you would have to drive downhill to the highway then south to get to a beach. SO if being near the wate ris important, not the place. Good high-elevation views of the water, true.

Don;t know about the construction at Mauna Kea. But surely there are other condos in your price range at Mauna Lani, for example. The high end ones are walking sitance to the beaches there. Or Kolea at Waikoloa.

where to post trip report?

Hey guys I%26#39;m back ! Just got in tonight, will have lots to say but want to know where to post it. Could be book length...lol

Some excursions we did included Hyatt star gazing tour, Kapulua zipline adventue,Paragon Lanai snorkel %26amp; sail, and Paragon sunset cruise.

Sue

where to post trip report?

If you went to Maui post on the Maui forum.

where to post trip report?

Thanks pzp- I was referring to maui but thought there might be a seperate trip report format. Guess not eh? lol

Sue

No specific format. I seem to see three main types of report.

Day by day report (including how they got there/rental car info/where they stayed)

Lists of activity reviews, restaurant reviews, beach reviews, etc.

  • 10 day Kona-Kauai Honeymoon

    Hi all!

I%26#39;m planning my honeymoon and am elated that we can spend 10 full days in Hawaii! My sister spent a semester at University of Hawaii Hilo so she is all over me going to the Big Island. Since she did it student-style, and we want something a little nicer, I am looking for suggestions!

Where%26#39;s a good spot to stay in/near Kona? We figure we%26#39;ll be based out of Kona for 6 days and since it%26#39;s our first stop on the honeymoon, would like a nice hotel/resort/cottage to stay at. My first wish is for it to be on the beach. After that, we have no preferences, but cheaper is better.

We%26#39;re going to fly over to Kauai for 3 days - which might end up being two days of travel (back %26amp; forth) and one day to spend on Kauai. Is that enough? We want to go to the Na Pali Coast. Any favorite (affordable) lodging suggestions?

Then we plan on returning to Hilo, going to see some of the waterfalls, farmer markets, lagoons. Then we want to fly out of Hilo to return home. Any lodging suggestions in Hilo would be greatly appreciated as well.

    Thanks!

    10 day Kona-Kauai Honeymoon

It makes no sense to go to Kauai and than come back to the Big Island. Start with Kona, followed by Hilo and Kauai. The Big Island is not known for its beaches so you might want to save the ';staying on the beach'; for Kauai. Kona Village Resort and the Four Seasons are the ';ultimate'; honeymoon places, followed by the Mauna Lani and the Orchid. Should you prefer to stay in town, the nicest hotel is the Sheraton. I will let the East side LE give you recommendations for Hilo.

    10 day Kona-Kauai Honeymoon

Thanks typicallytropical! I didn%26#39;t even think of not returning to Hilo. That%26#39;ll def give us more time in Kauai! Thanks!

to get a even a condo, let alone a hotel on the beach will cost you $500+ a night to $1200

    Your choices are Four Seasons ( 1000+) Kona Village (600) Fairmont ( 500) Mauna lani (450), Marriott (350) Kolea condo ( 500)

No hotel has a beach in Kona....got to go up to kohala...30 miles north.

each travel day will use up an entire day.

Hilo is a good idea to miss...it is not set up for visitors....but is for industry and shipping port.

Lagoons in Hilo.....you gotta%26#39; be kidding....its a shipping port with no beach. Your sister has fond memories....that over the years, like flowers, grow in beauty in ones memory. There are plenty of farmers markets everywhere just as good or better.

    Thanks hawaiidan!

Travel to and from Hawaii isn%26#39;t included in the 10 days we have to spend, only travel between islands. And, yes, she does have fond memories... I will aim to enjoy the best parts and skip out on anything not worthy of our precious time in paradise.

Would you recommend staying 30+ miles north of Kona just to have beach front access without paying a fortune?

Looks like the trip is shaping up nicely to be split between Kona and (someplace on) Kauai. :)

I for one would indeed recommend staying in S. Kohala, 30 miles north of the town of Kailua-Kona in order to have good beaches at my door or 10-15 minutes away by car. The town, though cute and touristy, is not a destination to fill the days.

If you want to go to Keauhou to catch a boat trip, it%26#39;s under 75 min in the morning from S. Kohala. Other trips are available from the beach at Waikoloa, at Mauna Lani, and at the Hobokohou Harbor, about 30-45 minutes away.

Going to Place of Refuge is another 75-minute trip, with coffee country on the way.

So, you ask, why not subtract 30 minutes from all these trips and stay in Kailua-Kona or at the Sheraton? Well: (1) lots of traffic down there--we mostly keep to north of the airport and have no worries on our vacations now; (2) no good beaches (Sheraton is on water bbut you can%26#39;t go in and hte pool is cold); (3) more crowded with tourists down there, the resorts feel uncrowded compared to town.

That said, if you want low-cost accommodations, want to walk to bars like Hard Rock and Lulus, want lots of low cost eateries, then that IS Kailua-Kona. But be aware the good beaches are not there.

    Best Air tour

Which would you recommend? Based on views, experience, price?

I was reading about an air ventures, which offers airplane tours vs. helicopters. I%26#39;m just wondering if it%26#39;s as easy to see things/take pictures.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

    Best Air tour

many many old threads on this subject. hit the search function and you%26#39;ll find lots of info.

    Best Air tour

all fly pretty much the same route using the same equipment...........

    MNM7, Aloha

Airventures is a great outfit, and does fly the same routes pretty much as the helo tours.

Very large windows for viewing, and everyone has a window seat. 6 seats are located in the passenger cabin, and you have lots of space, and room. There is an isle which seperates the seats, so it is not crowded shoulder to shoulder.

They slow fly for you to take photos. The aircraft is a new G-8 AERO VAN, and each person will have a headset to converse with the pilot.

Highly professional, with lots of aloha, and a great overall smooth and viewing experience.

Plus, the cost is nearly half that of some of the helo companies, at $ 140.00/person.

Please check them out and search Airventures, Kauai.

You can also call 866-464-7864 and talk with Donna.

Also, her hubby, and owner, Bill, is a Northwest Airline Capt., and his pilots are outstanding.

Yes, I have personally flown with AirVentures, as well as with three different helo tour companies here on Kauai. Love %26#39;em all.

and yes, there is a difference in some of the helo companies. My favorite is Air Kauai.

Have a most wonderful air tour. Bring your camera, and wear dark clothing to reduce any reflections on the windows.

    Have fun!

    Denny

My DH and I used Wings Over Kauai, fixed wing Cessna. I was very impressed with both the views and the pilot. We chose fixed wing instead of %26#39;copter because DH had never been on either, and less chance of air sickness in fixed wing. He loved it and had no problem. Price was very reasonable.

Recommend Highly, Call Elle and enjoy!

    Affordable Maui spa?

Does anyone know of an affordable, good place in Maui to get a massage (preferrably close to Kihei)? Mahalo!

    Affordable Maui spa?

Last year I booked a couple%26#39;s massage at Lei Spa in Lahaina. This isn%26#39;t close to Kihei, but we thought it was a great deal with fabulous treatments. We had the couple%26#39;s suite with a hot stones added. We are going back this May and will be reserving the same treatment. My husband who really doesn%26#39;t like to get massages, loved this one and told me to make sure we have time to do this again.

    Their website is www.leispa.com

    Enjoy!!

    sunset

I don%26#39;t know if Kauai is on Daylights savings time or what. I was wondering about what time is sunset in mid April? I was hoping to be able to see something as we fly in.

    sunset

Sunrise in Honolulu on April 15 is 6:12

    Kauai is close to that.

Hawaii does not have daylight saving time.

    www.sunrisesunset.com

    sunset

Sunset is 6:58 pm on 15 April in Lihue.

Hawaiian Standard Time is 4 hours behind Central Standard Time.

    Hi Maria_rn,

Hope you can make use of my file.

One thing about sunset in the islands.........it goes down quickly. There is not a lot of dusk, it falls to the horizon and disappears quickly, so be prepared with the cameras.

At Poipu you can see sunrise and sunset. we were there a week in Oct we watched every every sunrise from our lanai each morn. Had to walk a bit to see sunset but saw at least four of those.

By April, Daylight savings time should be in affect. So there should be 5 hours difference between Central and Hawaiian time. Correct?

Probably. I didn%26#39;t check. The difference between Central Standard and Hawaii Standard doesn%26#39;t change. If daylight savings is in effect in the Central time zone, then the difference is actually 5 hours.

Daylight Savings Time starts March 9th this year.

    non beachfront rental

    Hello,

My husband and I are planning our honeymoon for Sept.7-15 in Kauai, and would like to find a rental that is private, secluded, with a jungle-ey(not backyard-ey) feel to it. Needs a kitchen of some sorts. We are doing the resort thing, oceanside, for 2 nights and want something completely different for the rest of our time. I had my heart set on Aloha sweet seclusion rentals, on a river, but the owner is selling it, and not booking for that late in the year. I saw a review of Plantation Retreat Cottages, but they no longer seem to be active. I have to wonder if these are somehow related to the recent hub-bub re: unliscensed vacation rentals on the north shore. Does anyone have any current info on this, has anything been resolved? All the articles I%26#39;m seeing were from last fall. Is it only affecting the Haena area? Or all of the north shore? What are you supposed to do- ask them for a state tax id number? or permit number? I don%26#39;t want to offend any legit rental owners.

Any ideas on an out of the way, private from neighbors, jungley kind of rental? for up to $200 a night? Thanks, peoples

    happy thoughts....

    non beachfront rental

Aloha painter shell! Well, I would certainly pick the northshore . . . . if not Haena, Hanalei or that area would still provide that for you. My two favorite sites to look for accommodations are: www.kauaivacationresorts.com

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/kauai

I wish I knew of the perfect place - there are just so many out there, and the only ones I have bookmarked are budget places - not quite the atmosphere for a honeymoon. Good luck! :)

    non beachfront rental

Funny you should ask - I just found this place http://www.vrbo.com/56426 it looks delicious to me!

as well as another one we liked that is in Haena called Hale Pua Kai (VRBO will get but I think I found it through Hanalei Vacation rentals or one of the other agencies in the area) . Yes there will be much searching involved! Frustrating and yet fascinating!

I would also suggest you do a search on Ivy%26#39;s Place which is in the mountains near Hanalei and Haena, we seriously considered it.

    Congratulations and best of luck

    How about this place:

    http://www.junglecabana.com/

I%26#39;ve never stayed there, but I%26#39;ve always made a side trip to Moloa%26#39;a Bay when I%26#39;m on Kauai because I think the setting is so perfect--countryside giving way to a lush jungle feeling and then a beautiful, perfect little bay. It feels very secluded to me, and very, very quiet. I would think this area would be perfect for what you%26#39;re looking for.

I checked out vrbo.com, and they do have several listings for the area. The ';Jade Lily'; cottage described as ';your streamfront Hawaiian paradise'; caught my eye as filling your wants. Maybe not your price though.

Here%26#39;s the web address for the vrbo listing for Jade Lily: http://www.vrbo.com/28501

    And one called ';Rivervalley Retreat';

    http://www.vrbo.com/161883

    ';Special Indonesian Style Home';:

    http://www.vrbo.com/22166

And here%26#39;s the web address for all the vrbo.com listings for the Moloa%26#39;a area (Many under $200/night):

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…3013

Oh man, I%26#39;ve GOT to stop looking! I%26#39;ll drive myself mad with Kauai lust!

oh, here is one I did bookmark - very jungly looking and reasonably priced: www.vrbo.com/130810 :)

Oh my, coalminer, I couldn%26#39;t help myself so I went to that vrbo listing you linked to. That place looks perfectly lovely, and only, what $75-$95 a night? Geez.

Now I%26#39;ve gotta work on my husband to schedule a Kauai vacation before I explode!

WAmayberry - I have a whole list of places for the northshore that are cheap - last time we stayed in a studio condo for $66 a night - that included tax %26amp; clean out fee. I LOVE finding a deal!! So yes, persuade that husband!! Any excuse to go to Kauai is a good idea to me . . . :)

Thank you, all, for the wonderful response! I am just now starting to look through the suggestions, and I see a few in the Moloaa Bay area that may be just the ticket. 2 of my faves would be just slightly out of my price range, but I think we could cut back to just one night at the (Hyatt) resort(hubby not a big fan of resorts anyway - I%26#39;m sure he would be pleased) and we%26#39;re both very outdoorsey, so more time in natural settings = happy trip.

I%26#39;m still a bit concerned about the shakiness of the private rental situation. Is Moloaa Bay likely zoned correctly for this type of housing?%26amp;lt;vacation rental%26amp;gt;(and less subject to shut down after I book!) As opposed to Haena? Wasn%26#39;t one of the complaints ';misuse of conservation land';?

Am I reading too much (risk-wise) into what%26#39;s going on over there? Do you think it%26#39;s good enough to just ask ';is this a legal rental?'; or... check with... who?

Anyway, thank you all very much for your input and suggestions. This is a great forum! - glad I found it.

Here is another that I saved: http://www.napaliprop.com/kuraoka.htm

By the way, I would still try to stay as close to Hanalei unless you plan to do most of your cooking yourselves - it%26#39;s handier I think. :)

Moloaa Bay is definitely off the beaten path, but I%26#39;m not sure it is quite as ';jungle-ey'; as you seem to want. But if you think you might like it there, let me make one more suggestion - just to confuse you even more :) My wife and I stayed at this place near Anini Beach last summer:

    http://www.vrbo.com/22597

Even though it%26#39;s on the same property as the Plumeria House, we found it to be very private and quiet - we stayed there for our 30th anniversary for just that reason. An since you%26#39;re interested in outdoor activities, the owner provides kayaks at no charge, there is a great outdoor shower, and you%26#39;re only a few minute walk from a very uncrowded beach. The unit has an adequate kitchen and an outdoor grill, so we cooked almost all of our meals there. And you%26#39;re only a short drive to Hanalei and the many north shore beaches.

Volcanoes Nat Pk Area - How Many Days?

We, 2 couples low 50s to 60, are starting to plan a 15 day trip in the 2nd half of May 2008. Talking about seeing the VNP area first before spending remainder of trip on Kauai. We are outdoor active people for our ages. Definitely not the ';mega resort'; types. Love hiking, 6 to 8 miles reasonably level, 3 to 5 miles hilly, also snorkeling and kayaking.

We%26#39;d arrive in Hilo 6 to 7pm local, 11 to midnight based on where we started the day. Plan to stay the first night in a basic motel near airport. Rent a car and start the trip the next morning.

So the question is: how many additional nights should we allocate to the Volcano area?

We want to spend all the additional nights in Volcano Village and wander out from there. See and hike VNP, explore the coast along the lower Puna region, visit waterfall parks and botanical gardens just to the north of Hilo.

Accommodations we are looking at include: Lotus Garden Cottages, The Inn at Volcano, Kilauea Lodge, and various rental homes...any comments on any of these?

Volcanoes Nat Pk Area - How Many Days?

Is anyone retired military? If so check out Kilauea Military Camp.

www.kmc-volcano.com/ . I think it%26#39;s the closest lodging on the volcano.

Volcanoes Nat Pk Area - How Many Days?

Good idea to stay in Hilo the first night. If you search there were soem recent posts about the ';least worst'; place for a night there.

I think you probably want another 2 nights near VNP (to have 2 days there)...maybe 3 if you plan a full day doing Puna and visiting the gardens and falls around Hilo. You can see Waipio on your way over to the Kona side if you go the north way (more scenic).

I have stayed at the Lotus Garden Cottages several times when it was Kalani Garden Cottages and I loved that place, it was like my second home. I stayed at the Kilaeua Lodge only once and I certainly would pick the former for bein more private. However, I would not miss a dinner at the Lodge! There are several nice individual homes available for rent in Mauna Loa Estates too, which is on the other side of the highway. You will love the lower Puna area. Make sure you have dinner at Paolo%26#39;s in Pahoa too.

    sounds fun!

I can%26#39;t answer the ';how long'; question ... I have asthma and can%26#39;t take more than a short time at VNP or Volcano Village, so I rarely go.

Lower Puna coast -- definitely do this on a weekday. Very crowded on weekends, especially Sundays. Puna population has exploded in last couple years.

Now the botanical gardens are not going to be crowded with residents so are fine to do on a weekend.

We don%26#39;t have airport motels here like on the mainland. We have hotels. But that will work for your purpose, just don%26#39;t expect a motel set-up, for instance, all the hotels have parking issues and the lot will likely be full for the night when you arrive, whereas a motel usually provides your own parking spot outside your room.

Not sure if you said rent a car the next morning. That won%26#39;t be convenient, if that%26#39;s what you meant. Rent your car when you deplane.

Puna coast warning -- regular car break-ins at Kehena Beach parking, was talking to a Puna resident today who said it%26#39;s bad there; she won%26#39;t park there and she lives on the island so her car is less of a target than a rental ... theoretically. Sounds like any car is a target. This is just Kehena ... special case.

    Dear ecobird:

Make sure you have guide book Hawaii Big Island Revealed.

    www.wizardpub.com/bigisland/bigisland.html

As for ';Island hopping'; to Kauai, you%26#39;ll burn up a whole day just packing, moving, flying, etc. (valuable vaction time).

15 Days on Big Island is maybe not enough. I suggest starting in Hilo or Kona and looping your way around the Island staying a couple of days in each area.

Must things to do in Volcano National Park

    -Visitor Center %26amp; Art Center

    -Crater Rim Drive

    -Thiston Lava Tube

    -Kiluea Iki crater hike

-Petroglyphs at end of Chain of Craters Road

-Lava flow walk from Pahoa side.

    Must places:

    -Beaches/snorkeling in Kona area.

-City of Refuge near Captain Cook

    -Volcano National Park

-Day trip to Puna area especially Kapoho hot ponds

-Botanical gardens near Hilo then lunch at What%26#39;s Shakin (great smoothies).

-Waipio Valley east end of island

-Pololu Valley north end of island

    -Beaches near Waikoloa

3 days for the Volcano National Park is enough. Walk to lava flow is easier from Pahoa side.

Yes go with Bed %26amp; Breakfast type accomodations. I%26#39;m staying at My Island Bed %26amp; Breakfast near park http://www.myislandinnhawaii.com/

    Aloha, Have Fun

    TheodoreJay, Denver, CO

TJ, the Big Island Revealed is not a very popular book here, so you might want to hold on with that recommendation. You can use the search function on this site to find out more about that book and why it is not recommended.

    Dear typicallytropical :

I have all of the Wizard Publication books %26amp; wouldn%26#39;t leave for Hawaii without them. I am aware that many of the ';locals'; feel the Authors are not respectful %26amp; give away too many secret places.

Yes, we travelers must be respectful %26amp; tread lightly where ever we go %26amp; always ask for permission to go onto private lands.

However, Island Revealed series of books are written from a first hand point of view %26amp; I have found many of their recommendations very helpful %26amp; reasonable complete.

Unfortunately as the Islands become more %26amp; more popular the secret places are becoming fewer %26amp; fewer. One of the downsides of a tourist economy.

    Respectfully and Aloha, TheodoreJay

    Denver, CO

Interesting. You trust Doughty but put the word locals in quotes.

Bottom line - there are better less controversial books that have all the same places listed in them, w/o the problems or dangers of the ';revealed'; books. For this reason, I never recommend the revealed books, and never will. Ones local library is an excellent source for vacation planning, as is this and other travel sites. Best of all, borrowing books from the library is free!

    Good luck and happy travels!

';I am aware that many of the ';locals'; feel the Authors are not respectful %26amp; give away too many secret places.'; Yes, it is correct that they are not respectful. The ';secret places'; really have nothing to do with it. Most of the ';secret places'; can not be accessed by rent-a-car, not even a 4X4, and even though they are more known because of this book, the visitors still can not go there without extreme hardship.

Lots of wonderful hikes in the national park. Bird Park (also known as Kipuka Puaulu) is a easy 1 mile walk with lots of birds singing and the Kalij Pheasants walking about. Kilauea Iki is 4 miles with a moderate climb back up to your car. Well worth the trip as its really a great hike. Pu%26#39;u Huluhulu which is off of chain of creaters is about 3 miles round trip. This trail is fairly flat with a hike up Pu%26#39;u Huluhulu (a hill with a beautiful view looking over to Pu%26#39;u O%26#39;o. Pu%26#39;u is hill in Hawaiian. Another fun hike is out to Pu%26#39;u Loa Petroglyphs towards the bottom of chain of creaters. One could spend a week in the park doing many of the incredable hikes but I would say at least spend a couple of days in this beautiful area.

  • suggestions for last day activities prior to red-eye flight?

Aloha, we%26#39;ll be on Kauai mid-March and returning on Alaska Airlines red-eye to Seattle. Any suggestions as to how to fill our last day? What should we do with our luggage? Will it be safe to leave it in our trunk? Thanks so much for your help. I%26#39;ve really enjoyed reading this forum as we%26#39;ve been planning this trip! Maloha

suggestions for last day activities prior to red-eye flight?

    Aloha, elliottsonpender,

I got what I thought was a great idea from the man we are renting a home through in Princeville. He suggested buying a one day membership at the Princeville Country Club (I think it%26#39;s around $25-$30). We will have access to their pool, showers, spa, gym, golf, restaurant, etc. up until we leave for the airport. If we choose to leave and go to a beach, we will still have a place to get cleaned up before leaving.

suggestions for last day activities prior to red-eye flight?

Just remember that the spa does not include being able to use the Princeville Hotel%26#39;s pool. A lot of people think you can go to the hotel and use those facilities. It basically gives you access to their gym, showers, lap pool. Anyone can use the golf course and restaurant. Also check with the spa as they are remodeling and moving to the hotel.

First of all check with the place you are staying and see if they do a late check out policy. If you can get it extended a few hours that would even be nice. Then go have lunch, go for a drive somewhere you haven%26#39;t been (suitcases are fine in the trunk), do some last minute shopping, visit the museum and go to Dukes for dinner. You could even drop you luggage off before dinner as Dukes is close to the airport.

Another idea is there are showers at many beaches. Get that extra day of tanning in, shower and then go to Dukes or Portofino for dinner.

Your luggage is probably safe except at remote trail heads or remote beaches. We do have some petty theft so don%26#39;t push it.

The spa idea is a good one. Might also call the Marriot to see what the deal is re their day spa. I know they have a separate pool up on the bluff but unsure what other amenities you can use. They are right at the airport so very convenient. And the beach is good for swimming.

jebett, does the Princeville Country Club not have their own pool? I must have misunderstood what the man told me. Is the Princeville Country Club connected to the Princeville Hotel in some way? I was unaware of that and never thought about going to the hotel%26#39;s pool.

I am on the same page as Elliott with Alaska Airlines- we have to check out of our place at noon, but we don%26#39;t fly until 10:30pm!

Ask if your host will give you a late check out, but it may depend on when the next guest arrives. We%26#39;re crossing our fingers that that have a late arrival time!!

we have arranged a late check-out well ahead of time, for a fee. it is worth it to have the day to enjoy and still allow time for final packing, showers, and a leisurely dinner....you can actually feel more like it is another one of your vacation days, instead of just ';day to go home';. well worth the fee!!!

The Princeville Country club has their own pool. The facility is just off the main highway about 1 mile south of the main entrance to P-ville proper.

check it out. you can see the pool

    鈥ahoo.com/鈥?

it%26#39;s actually east. In those areas Kuhio Hwy runs basically from east to west along the northern top of the island.

The pool at the spa is a lap pool, right Dave? I haven%26#39;t been there in ages. It%26#39;s not really a country club. It is located where the Prince course is about a mile before the main entrance to the Princeville community. I mentioned the differences to the pool because when people hear ';the pool at Princeville'; they assume it%26#39;s the infinity pool at the hotel. There have been many posts on here asking if you buy a spa pass does that entitle you to spend the day at the pool at the hotel and that is a no! Last I heard they are moving the spa from the golf course to the main hotel. Not sure when that will take place. They are doing it because guests don%26#39;t like driving to the golf course for their spa treatments. Makes sense to me.

That $30 pass might cost you a lot more if you do the spa treatments like massages, facials etc.

    ';Ask if your host will give you a late check out, but it may depend on when the next guest arrives. We%26#39;re crossing our fingers that that have a late arrival time!!';

It usually doesn%26#39;t depend on if the next guests are arriving late. It depends on if anyone is arriving that day at all. If I don%26#39;t have someone checking in the day someone leaves I will offer them a 1/2 off daily rate for stays up to 5 pm. Anything past that time and I feel a guest should pay for the entire day. If you leave by 5pm then it gives you time to do last minute shopping and have dinner near the airport. It sure makes the trip more enjoyable not to have to pack up early.

    Driving Kihea

What time of day to avoid driving through Kihea: going Wailea - Maalea and back?

    Driving Kihea

Two-lane Kihei Road along the coast is always pokey. You can choose Piilani Highway above the coast if you want to move faster. Rush hour is always going to have more traffic wherever on earth you are. Fridays are especially difficult; it%26#39;s the whole ';Aloha Friday'; thing! (Gotta love that song.) This Saturday is the Whale Day Parade, so avoid Kihei Road unless you are attending.

    Driving Kihea

we actually don%26#39;t mind the traffic because the ocean view on South Kihei road is so great. Once you hit the northern area of Kihei it speeds up a bit.

Like on the mainland, traffic picks up in the late afternoon and early evening.

    Sam's Club

Do you have to be a member...or do they allow a day pass in which one pays the higher prices?

    Thank you.

    Sam's Club

    Hi Discover,

I%26#39;m not sure? you might try logging on to samsclub.com and seeing how it works. They have an 800 number you can call. I%26#39;ve always just bought the memebership since we have a ton here in TX. This year I bought Costco. They%26#39;ve added so many here in San Antonio that I just have to have it plus my boys eat like crazy! I plan on visiting the one in Oahu to stock up on snacks for a week.

    Sam's Club

Thanks I will try the number.... the web site said nothing when I looked yesterday.

We have Costco card too but we are closer to lugging groceries from Sam%26#39;s Club....and I did not want to buy a card as their are not many around me to make it worth while.

    Princeville Spa?

We are staying at a house which is in the %26#39;Princeville%26#39; area, or so it says on the website.

We want to do a spa day and were considering the Princeville Spa, is that in the hotel or someplace else in the community? I feel like I have read some things on here about it not being in the hotel.

We were hoping to do spa and lunch, but I am wondering if the spa is not at the hotel, will they have places for lunch?

    Is it a nice spa?

Is there also a Princeville Country Club that is separate from the hotel?

    I am %26#39;Princeville ignorant%26#39; and need help!

    Princeville Spa?

The spa is at the golf course right now. It is being moved to the main hotel but who knows when.

    Princeville Spa?

Is it nice? Are the better places to go for a spa day?

There is a place in Haena next to Hanalei Colony Resort. There were a few posts about this place in December. You can do a search of spas. It is called Hanalei Day Spa. There is also a day spa in on the East side at WBR.

What are the best, cheapest, adventures?

We%26#39;ll be going to Kauai at the end of the month for the first time (32 years old, 10 year anniversary). We have seen so many things to do, and are interested in them all but don%26#39;t want to spend too much money. We%26#39;ll be there for four five nights. Some of the things that we%26#39;ve seen so far are:

    Zipline tours

    Snuba diving

    Horseback riding

    Helicopter or Airplane tours

    ATV tours

Where can I find these activities cheap? What prices can I expect? Are any of them too much hype and not enough fun? What other activites are fun to do? Do we need to reserve these activities in advance (is it a problem if it rains)?

    Thanks for any advice.

What are the best, cheapest, adventures?

Go to hawaiiwebdesign.com for discounts. It lists all the prices and discounted prices.

Helicopter tours are very $$$$ but so worth it.

I do the horseback riding often but could skip it for other things to do. I think the ATV%26#39;S and Ziplining are a blast. Haven%26#39;t done snuba but I have heard it is over rated. I would just snorkel. The only other tour I would have you consider is the Na Pali Coast boats out of Pt Allen.

Don%26#39;t forget to visit the canyon if you%26#39;ve never been to Kauai and if staying on the South Shore drive to Hanalei for the day. Lots to see and do on the way up and won%26#39;t cost you much.

    Have fun and happy anniversary.

What are the best, cheapest, adventures?

if you%26#39;ve the time to spend on a timeshare presentation you can get 2 for 1 on activities.

    aloha , supe !

Dave is right on, if you qualify, you might want to do a time share presentation, and get a two for one, or at least % 100.00 or so off. It can vary.

Just some suggestions from having been around the island and activities for some time.

Obviously use the time share for the most expensive thing that you are going to do...especially if you can wrangle a two for one.

Check Brenneckes activity desk, in poipu. They may help you out with the top of the line helo rides with a time share discount 2 for 1 helo tours. ( top companies ). They were working with the new Marriot Waiohai, and it was a class operation. There are other activity booths all over the island...just do some research on what helo companies they use.

Ziplines are fairly reasonable, just book them early as they fill up very quickly.

SNUBA: Whew....you can have a much better experience at Lawai Beach snorkeling on your own. We see the snuba classes, and have observed them from under water, and it is an all time goat rope. You are tethered together with air hoses all over the place, and most people not knowing anything about the ocean, or what is happening. Total mess !

Lawai in Poipu Area: ( aka '; Beach House '; ): Enter at the white sandy area, NOT over the rocks ( dark area ), and go out to the bommies ( coral heads ), and be free to fin slowly and explore. Best on the south shore.

    -------------------------------------------------

CJM Stables: have some farily inexpensive rides, they have several different rides at different prices.

Check out the Ultimate Kauai Guide Book for a what they offer, or call them at 808-742-6096. We see them riding the coastal trail most times we hike there.

    -------------------------------------------------

There are many things that you can have a great time out free or inexpensively.

Solo Kayak the Wailua river, and hike to beautiful secret falls for a dip and a bring you own picnic lunch.

    ___________________________________________________

If the helo flight does not come about, you can enjoy a cirlce island tour in a new G-8 Airvan with AIR VENTURES....out of Lihue Aiport and about

$ 140.00 per person. Nearly half off what a highly recommended helo company charges. Highly recommend.

    -----------------------------------------------------

No charge for: Hiking the trails or driving to the lookouts. Taking photos at spouting horn, or walking and playing at Maha%26#39;ulepu Beach.

How about a nice picnic bbq at Poipu Beach park after a fun day at the beach, snorkeling, or swimming, or boogie boarding at Brenneckes Beach.

    --------------------------------------------------

Drive up north, stopping at Opeakea falls for photos and then on to Kiluea Light House, and further on to Hanalei Town, and the end of the northshore road, to snorkel or sun at Ke%26#39;e beach.

    ---------------------------------------------------

Things to do on Kauai are never ending, just select what appeals to you. Study your guide book, and you will find what you like.

    Denny

    soupe !

That was suposed to be $ 100.00 off , not one hundred percent off, Missed it by one key.

Different activiy outlets have different contracts with the various activities. Some require a combo income of $ 85,000 annualy, own your own home, etc.

    Others less.

Some are class operations, and others less so.

We usually just ponied up the bags of shells, and spent our precious island time be active each day.

    Your call.

    Denny

I agree with the previous post about snuba. It is not worth the time or money.

Also, if you do want to spend the time head I would highly recommend Ke%26#39;e beach. The water is very clear and snorkeling is great. Also you would have the opportunity to climb up the Napali coast. The trail begins near Ke%26#39;e beach and you only need to go a mile or so to have amazing views of the untamed coastline.

My advice is go early. It gets crowded and parking gets tough.

Aloha!! Some of the best things on Kauai are free - my favorite activity is snorkeling. Other than the initial investment in gear, it%26#39;s free. And while I agree with the previous poster that Ke%26#39;e beach is a great snorkeling beach, it%26#39;s usually only good during the summer months. While there can be calm days on the Northshore in the winter time, it%26#39;s usually not - surf condtions are too rough. Since you are coming there soon, I would plan to snorkel on the South side of the island where the water is calm. You can always ask about local beach conditions when you arrive on Kauai. Have a wonderful time!! :)

Awesome! Thank you so much for your input. I%26#39;ll start re-planning some of my ideas now. I was a little iffy on the snuba thing, so thanks especially for that advice.

We just got back from seven spectacular days in Kauai and spent very little money on ';activities';. We rented a car for $148 including taxes/fees, spent about $100 on groceries, and $40 on a weekly snorkel gear rental for two. In the evenings we poured over ';The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook'; (you MUST have this!!) to decide what we wanted to do the next day, and every morning we got up, packed a lunch, grabbed our stuff, and hit the road. We initially thought it would be fun to zipline or do a boat tour of the Na Pali coast, etc, but we found we were having a blast doing all of the things which are free : )

I also noticed on our last day that if we had rented snorkel gear from Snorkel Bob%26#39;s (various locations across the island), the weekly rental rate would have been $9 each, and they have masks for people who wear glasses.

    Hope you have fun!

I think the best value paid activity was kayaking the Wailua for $50.

But honestly, I am really cheap, but I wouldn%26#39;t blink at forking out $200/person again for the open doors helicopter ride. Go with Interisland and you don%26#39;t have to worry about finding the best deal.....everyone pays the exact same amount.

And I third/fourth the notion that Snuba at Lawai is worthless. A snorkel works just as well if not better.

    Maui Dinner Cruises

This summer, we are holding a family reunion in Maui and would like to take a sunset dinner cruise. There appear to be a few options available, including a luau/cruise combo package and would like to hear from a few ';tried and true'; TripAdvisor members.

    Thanks!

    Maui Dinner Cruises

what is the name for the luau cruise? that sounds like something we would be interested in.

  • Good Carry-out in Lihue?

My husband and I are staying in Lihue this week (Marriott) and rather than try to get into a restaurant on Valentine%26#39;s Day, we decided it%26#39;d be nice to get some good carry-out, a bottle of wine, and dine on our balcony. Anybody have any suggestions where we can stop by this evening to pick up dinner? Mahalo!

    Good Carry-out in Lihue?

Call down to Portofino and ask if they%26#39;ll do take out. Or any of the restaurants across the street. At least your food has a chance of being warm once you get it back to the room.

    Good Carry-out in Lihue?

Or do the opposite and get sushi from Kintaro and poke from Fish Express and keep everything cool until you get to your room.

Costco wine selection, Costco BBQ chicken and/or ribs, Costco sushi tray, Costco prepared salads, Costco New York cheese cake, Costco this and that!

Otherwise, the Barefoot Bar under Duke%26#39;s. Fish Express on Kuhio Hwy in Lihue or Star Market deli in Kukui Grove Shopping Center each about 10 minutes from Lihue Marriott.

But, I am thinking you will not have much of a problem getting seated in restaurants at Anchor Cove or the Harbor surrounding the Marriott with the exception of Duke%26#39;s upstairs.

    hey what is Fish Express/.

maria m: Easiest way to explain Fish Express:

    www.trykauai.com/Kauai_Fish_Markets.html

Fish Express is a freah fish market on the main highway in Lihue...Mauak side between Hilo Hatties and Wallmart.

Gotta tell you , The huli huli ( rotissary ) chicken is absolutely fantastic. The have the same type of chicken at Star Market ( kikui grove), along with a deli section, and a pretty great wine section.

Only a five minute drive from you up Nawiliwili Rd.

You can head back to your balcony and just enjoy the evening without any thundering herds.

    That sounds pretty darned nice.

    Denny

It may sound crazy, but the first night of our honeymoon my lovely wife and I went to Hamura%26#39;s Saimin. It was one of the most memorable meals/experiences we%26#39;ve ever had. And we took a slice of their heavenly Lilikoi pie back to the condo. That was a priceless moment. We%26#39;re weird.

everyone raves about dukes, are you at the Lihue Marriott? if so just pick it up at the bar, get a bottle of wine from costco

Thanks for the great suggestions! We%26#39;re looking forward to a nice relaxing night now. Oh, and we did Hamura%26#39;s Saimin for lunch today....YUM.

OK no longer Valentines Day, but try L%26amp;L BBQ. It is a sort of greasy spoon to-go place but we really enjoyed the food. Good prices and good food.

Hawaii All Day 2/14 on Travel Channel!

Just giving a heads up. Enjoy a day of virtual paradise!

Hawaii All Day 2/14 on Travel Channel!

thanks i%26#39;ll be sure to watch!

Hawaii All Day 2/14 on Travel Channel!

    Thank you so much!!

    I%26#39;m watching it now!!

    Hey Scincali,

Thanks so much for letting me know about this show. I%26#39;m going in March so I made sure to watch it! I drove my hubby crazy last night when I kept saying, hurry, hurry, look for the Travel Channel on ';discovery'; it%26#39;s funnny. He was looking for it and then he asked me are you sure it isn%26#39;t just the travel channel? Haaa, anyway I loved this series. I recorded a lot of them too. The one I found most interesting was the top 10 world%26#39;s best beaches. I was so excited (since I%26#39;m going) that #1 was lankai beach in Oahu and #2 was North Shore (Pipers %26amp; waimea) ooops--I don%26#39;t think I spelled that right! Anyway, those were on my list to do NOW they will be priorities! thanks :)

    Dang, that would be great.

Our Travel channel in Canada is so bad compared to the American one. I actually cancelled my subscription to our, because there is so little, and they repeat the same shows so often. I really wish we had access to the American version.

a word of caution...many of the travel channels hawaii programs were filmed as many as 6 years ago, and in the case of the Big Island, is pretty outdated and not accurate.

also included is the food channel...Hawaii on $50 a day.....which is rather funny...

Use this fourm to double check the information you get....

thanks for the info. The travel channel said it was the best for 2008. Unless, it%26#39;s a repost and they just put 2008.

I watched one of the programs last night that I had not seen before and I always watch when Hawaii is on the travel channel!

Hope they have another Hawaii day soon! I love all the beautiful scenery.

wrist bands and the Grand Wailea

We are staying at the WBV next month with a few small kids (2-5). It would be great to be able to go to either the Grand Wailea pool or the Mariott pool a few times to play to change things up. I hear they are pretty strict about access.

Anyone have any insights or thoughts on how to get some wristbands? I know some of the units have an agreement or membership with the GW but our owners do not.

    thanks in advance.

wrist bands and the Grand Wailea

not sure how possible that is, I have friends who work there and even they said they couldn%26#39;t get one for us, we tried to sneak in anyway and after about 15 minutes we were asked to go get wrist bands but we weren%26#39;t guest so we just left :) but if you do find a way let me know it was really fun for those 15 minutes :)

wrist bands and the Grand Wailea

I%26#39;m going to CA next week so I was thinking I could park the trailer in your driveway an\d hook up to your water and electrical, OK???

lazydays- If you can afford WBV than you can afford a one night stay at GW which gets you 2 days at the pools. We were there in June and GW is VERY strict about the wristbands and if you don%26#39;t have one, you really stand out. We did see a couple teens without wristbands get escorted out of the pool so save yourself the embarassment and just reserve a room.

    hahaha, good one Honu Ohana.

wow, didn%26#39;t realize you guys run such a hard core site. Ohana thanks for your advice but I don%26#39;t think your smart comments help anyone here or even make you look cool to your virtual friends. One would think I could ask a simple question and get a simple answer.

OK, Lazydays, I apologize. I was in a flip mood and although you%26#39;d have no wy of knowing in advance, the question about using the GW pools for free is a frequent one on here. If you search, some of the threads go on for quite a bit. But that has nothing to do with you personally and so I understand you are offended and apologize.

First of all, this is not a hard-core site.

The best way to use the Grand Wailea pool is to rent a room like the rest of the people who pay to have the right to use that pool.

The GW pool is not a public pool or playground for your little ones. I do not think that is rude of me to say, it is only the truth.

I wanted my son to experience that pool too. So we stayed there on our trip for 2 nights then we stayed at a condo for the other days. It was well worth it but I would not have wanted to stay there all the days because we never would have left the property, it is lovely.

lazy--as you can see, you hit on a hot button here. This has been done to death on this board, and I think some of us just get a little weary of people asking if they can go to the pools of a resort, but not pay to stay at the resort. Some of us view it as akin to stealing. I%26#39;m sure that wasn%26#39;t your intent, but it can seem that way when people ask this question.

So, to answer your question, no, you cannot get wristbands for the GW unless you eserve a room at the GW to use its pools. And keep in mind the occupancy limits at the GW is 4 for most rooms, so you would get 4 wristbands and no more.

^ Absolutely right. There is a ';search'; feature if people would just use it!

The same thing happens at Disney Hotels- especially with Spring break visitors. I personally resent it when someone goes in and uses the pool for free when I am paying to stay there. I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;s insulting to anyone to say this!! It is nice to break up a vacation by staying at different places also so that might be fun for you to do!

    po'olenalena beach wedding

    Hello,

Po%26#39;olenalena beach was reccomened to us as a more private option than Makena beach for a sunset wedding. We are getting married Monday evening feb 25th and it will be our first time in Maui. Has anyone used Po%26#39;olenalena? Any other suggestions??

    Thanks!

    po'olenalena beach wedding

We just returned from Maui and tho%26#39; we didn%26#39;t see any weddings, we did see flowers left on the sand from one at Po%26#39;olenalena. It is a lovely beach, and wide enough that you should find a few options for your ceremony%26#39;s setting. We used to go to Makena Beach a lot (in front of the Maui Prince Hotel), but were disappointed this year as there was noisy construction right next to the beach and the approach to the beach isn%26#39;t as ';nice'; as it was when we were there previous years. We used to see weddings in the park right next to Makena (on a slight hill overlooking the beach), but you wouldn%26#39;t want to get married there now. (my opinion, anyway)

    po'olenalena beach wedding

Po%26#39;olenalena beach was our favorite while on Maui, although we liked it for the boogie boarding. It was typically very quiet, and as the previous poster said, it%26#39;s large so you%26#39;ve got options. And there are nice outcroppings running the length of the beach. Congrats and good luck!

my wife and i were married on po%26#39;olenalena beach 4/24/07 a sunset wedding,EVERYTHING went perfect, stunning sunset views, great beach, very few anywhere on the beach near sunset.you can not do better with that selection as your sunset wedding beach of choice.

previous post was supposed to read,';very few PEOPLE anywhere on the beach at sunset';.

    coqui

When I was in Hilo 3 years ago, the coqui frogs where all the talk. What is the current situation. Are they still driving people mad?

    coqui

I like em but I also don%26#39;t have to live with them. I think TT also enjoys them in moderation; not sure if KK likes them so much. But they%26#39;re still around, and likely will be for a while. Especially in Puna.

    coqui

I sure love them, they put me to sleep in no time! I sleep better in Puna than anywhere else.

Was in Puerto Rico many years ago and loved hearing them there too. Never bothered me then and didn%26#39;t bother me when last in Hilo. I guess since they have no predators in HI their concentrations are much higher and therefore louder. Seems everyone was trying to figure out how to get rid of them and they were tearing down whole forest areas in their quest. Maybe some creature has devleloped a taste for them now? Hoping to come visit next month (but staying in Kohala this time).

I hate them and they are a worse problem than ever. They just held the first annual coqui conference here and it was in the paper this week.

In one year alone the population went from infesting about 7000 acres (those reported) in 2006, to 25,000 acres in 2007, which is huge.

The frog density can be as high as 20 THOUSAND frogs per acre, each frog having the volume capacity of a lawnmower.

They have given up on eradicating them on the Big Island, and are working on plans to stop the spread and clean up some areas.

So far the only real control is through thousands of dollars and many man and woman hours spent hand spraying and volume spraying.

Even if they don%26#39;t bother you, they should, or it would be at least courteous to others not to minimize the issue. The emotional, physical, and financial toll on people here is very high-- people are sad because they can%26#39;t enjoy sitting out at night, can%26#39;t sleep in many cases, have to wander around in the dark with spotlights and sprayers (that would be me) -- and in general it is no fun and expensive.

If you do the math --

If all 25K acres were at max infestation of 20K per acre, that would be a population of

FIVE HUNDRED MILLION frogs and more than tripling each year.

Now the only reason the population is lower than that is the spraying programs done by people who are taking the frog explosion seriously and working on keeping the density down, because it has been seen first hand that when left alone they will and have been achieving that density.

When you say it like that... hrm, maybe they aren%26#39;t so nice. LOL

5 Million coqui%26#39;s at once... dear lord.

Five HUNDRED million, that is half a billion, JC!!!

Last night I spent at least an hour outside in the rain with a flashlight and gallon sprayer looking for the little buggah that had parked itself somewhere around the front lanai and was driving me nuts, so I%26#39;m not feeling too frog-friendly just at the moment.

Yeah that%26#39;s a lot of frogs. That%26#39;s like a plague of frogs. What you spray them with? Caffeine? Maybe give them some Vault, LOL.

I was just listening to one of my nature sound programs (hey it helps me sleep) and one of the sounds under Frogs is the Coqui. I%26#39;m sure more than enough people turn to that one and scream, LOL.

I enjoyed hearing them in Puerto Rico, but they don%26#39;t belong Hawai`i where the population can explode as mentioned.

    american airline

has anyone used AA to fly to maui. i have tickets on hold for 5/13-5/20 at 332.90 pp.?

    american airline

    Absolutely awesome price!

    american airline

sounds like a good price -- where are you flying from and is that a round trip price

just for fun -i checked out aa from pdx to maui and return for your dates and i got 894.00 pp round trip with absolutely horrible and i mean horrible connections --

i have confirmed tix for apr for 2 r/t on hawaiian

for 868.00 total and for nov for 768.00 r/t for 2 total

so if your price is for a r/t tix and not one way its a great price -- you couldnt live closer to maui then i do unless you live in calif or washington

I did. I traveled with my wife and infant twins in January. I could not have been more thrilled. American was amazing. From check in until we arrived, the service was great. We flew coach and the seats of course are not huge, but still, the kindness of the staff more than made up for it.

In contrast to United, which I have had the unfortunate experience to fly recently, American acts like they genuinely want people to fly their airline.

We%26#39;ve been with AA through thick and thin, and now through not-quite-so-thin.

Weather cancelled our trip out, but AA called to inform us 15 hours in advance. They couldn%26#39;t get us replacement first class seats until two days later, but they did DO it. When we boarded, the attendant asked, and someone agreed to switch seats so DH and I could sit together. The food was actually tasty and the wine OK, and we had REAL silverware (a first since 9/11). Best of all...the hot fudge sundaes have returned!!! The flight was an hour late leaving, but we made up most of the time.

We splurge with our AAdvantage miles every year on this 9-hours-out, 8-hours-back trip.

We still miss the direct ORD/OGG flights. Nine hours is enough. Then you add the hour-plus in Honolulu and 30 mins. on to Maui. It gets to be a long travel day.

seriously, where are you located? im in ny, and the flights are like $800 to over $1000.

We always fly AA to Maui. Never ever had an issue. We fly direct from Los Angeles.

WOW! $332.90 per person is a very good price, that is round trip? where are you leaving from?

I%26#39;ll be in Maui May 13 thru 25 also, I%26#39;m hoping the weather is good and not alot of kids, did you pick a place to stay at yet? I know I%26#39;m starting to get excited but not looking forward to flying, I%26#39;m leaving out of Philly.

  • Restaurant Reservations?

Arriving to Kauai March 5th -16th should we make reservations now even though not exactly what nights we will be eating out. We will be at Hyatt last 4 days tidepool or can we wait till we arrive to make them?

    Restaurant Reservations?

For the more popular restaurants like Beach House and Tidepools I would make reservations early. You can always change them once you get there. At BH you want to be there at sunset. For Dukes or any other place like that you should be fine as spring break doesn%26#39;t start until towards the end of your trip.

    Restaurant Reservations?

I%26#39;ve been to Kauai 4 times--all at different times of the year, and have never had a problem making dinner reservations the day of, or the day before even for popular fancy-schmancy places like Tidepools, Roy%26#39;s, and Gaylords. The one exception I can think of is the Beach House though. As I understand it, they are booked weeks in advance.

But I%26#39;ll let you in on a little secret that the hostess told me--they serve the same menu in the bar area, and they don%26#39;t take reservations for the bar. So if can%26#39;t get reservations, you can still eat there and enjoy the view if you can be there right when they open and snag a table in the bar. The atmosphere isn%26#39;t quite as nice in the bar area as it is on the main restaurant floor (noisier, more crowded etc.) but if you can look past that, the food and view are really excellent.

If you are staying at the Hyatt, you will be able to get reservations at Tidepools at the last minute. I%26#39;m sure they will find a table for you.

However, we like to sit by the open window, to feed the Koi Fish, so we phone or email the concierge before we leave home. We say we are staying at the hotel, and would like to reserve a wndow table at Tidepools, after the torchlighting ceremony, about 7 PM.

    Luai on Lanai

We will be spending 5 days on Maui and 5 days on Lanai. Is there a recommended luai on Lanai that would allow us to try something different than the ones on Maui?

    Luai on Lanai

    Aloha jbar1usa,

Sorry no luau%26#39;s on Lana%26#39;i, and that is one of the nice things about the island. Eating buffet style food in a noisy environment and sitting with a bunch of strangers at a big table is not my idea of fun. If you are doing a luau on Maui, IMO you will not feel a need to do another one.

Now they do have luau grounds at Manele Bay which is used for private parties for big groups. So if you will be part of a big group they may have a party there.

This is not to say there is nothing nice to do in the evening on the island, just a little more mellow than on other islands. Eating a nice meal out is my favorite evening activity. Also, there is live music in the Hale Ahe Ahe Bar at Manele Bay and the Lodge at Koele lobby every night (fairly mellow); and at the Lana%26#39;i City Grill in the Hotel Lana%26#39;i, they have live music on weekends (and occasionally other times which is more lively).

If this is your first trip to Lana%26#39;i, you may want to check out my inside page regarding things to do on the island. Use this link:

    tripadvisor.com/Travel-g29219-c2257/Lanai:Ha…

Have a great visit to my favorite island!

    -DrV

    Luai on Lanai

As Dr. V said, there are no luaus in Lana%26#39;i. For entertainment, I%26#39;d recommend the Hale Ahe Ahe lounge. We went here for at least an hour or two each night just to hear the live music. We liked it so much that we even ate there one night! There is also live music in the lobby area near the Terrace restaurant at the Lodge. We found this to be very enjoyable as well, especially during our meal at the Terrace.

I also spent 3 days in Maui on my trip. Being that this was my first trip to Hawaii, we felt that it was necessary to attend a luau. We went to the Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt Regency. The show was great, but the food was marginal.

Enjoy the luau in Maui. Enjoy the relaxation in Lana%26#39;i.

Sailing/BoatingSightseeing on the NaPali coast of Kauai

I am planning a vacation to Kauai on 4/28 - 5/3 this year and need some help choosing a company to go sailing with to the NaPali coast. We are staying in Poipu and I know that most, if not all leave from Port Allen, but I am stumped as to which company is the best. I do want to apologize for not knowing much about boats, so please bear with me.

I was thinking that sailing up the coast and then attempting snorkeling was the best option. Can anyone enlighten me on which would be best? Thank you so much!

Sailing/BoatingSightseeing on the NaPali coast of Kauai

There are SOOOO many threads about this. Here%26#39;s just one. You can do a search under Napali boat tours:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g29218-i304-k15825…

Sailing/BoatingSightseeing on the NaPali coast of Kauai

Thank you for your response. I did look at the threads that you pointed out, but I was really looking for some comments of people who had been on a tour that they really liked!! And since I know I want to sail out of Port Allen, all of the info on the north shore sailing companies is irrelevant. Can anyone help?

I just gave that last bit of advice for people interested in sails out of Hanalei.

I have done both Capt Andy%26#39;s and HoloHolo and they are both good.

I did the Na Pali Explorer. They leave out of Waimea (about 30 minutes from Poipu). Fun %26amp; a really good captain. Kind of made me nervous to be out in 8+ swell but the guy in charge knew exactly how to read the waves.

    Trip Report (Jan. 20-25)

    Aloha!

Wow, this was a fantastic trip! There is so much to say, that I must warn you all....this is long!

We first spent a couple of nights in Maui, and came to Lana%26#39;i via the Expeditions Ferry from Lahaina. The ride was very enjoyable, especially with the constant views of the spouting humpback whales around the boat. While the ride there was very smooth, the return trip was a bit windy and rocky. All in all though, we enjoyed this means of transportation and highly recommend it!

Upon arrival at the harbor, we were picked up by the Four Seasons shuttle and taken to the Manele Bay property to check in. As soon as we got off the shuttle, we were greeted with leis and escorted to the front desk.

I went on this trip with my fiancee, the purpose being to celebrate our recent engagement. We literally got engaged the week before. This was more or less a bonus surprise for my fiancee. I let this be known when I made the reservation. Having read some reviews here, I thought maybe we would get an upgrade or at least a bottle of champagne from the hotel to welcome us. No such luck though. We were given the room we booked, which was a garden view. My fiancee really wanted to see the ocean though, so I asked to upgrade and even offered to pay for it. This did not do us much good though, as they said there were no rooms available at the Garden Ocean level. We would have had to go two steps up to a partial oceanview. The extra $1000 to do this really was not in my budget, so we stuck with the room we were given. We were bummed for a bit, as we were escorted to our room.

After a few minutes, we arrived at our room, walked in, and BAM, there was the ocean! Our primary view was in fact of gardens, which were beautiful by the way. We were lucky though, and placed on the second floor (Starfish wing). Because of this, we were able to see the ocean (not the beach though). This was great for us though, and we were so happy that we did not spend the extra $1000 to upgrade the room. Walking around though, we did note that the rooms on the ground floor below us definitely did not have any view of the ocean. So if you are booking a garden view room, see if you can get on the 2nd floor....there was no champagne or anything else for that matter at any point during the trip. Actually, no one ever really did anything for us or said anything. This was a bit of a bummer too, but I guess that is just life. Somewhat sad though, considering the Hyatt in Maui gave us a double upgrade in rooms to a partial oceanview on the top floor! Oh well.....other than that, I really do not have anything bad to say about the hotel. Everything else was great!!!

The service at the Four Seasons Manele Bay was fantastic, especially at the pool and beach. The snorkeling was great. Many people love to be in the water with dolphins, but for me the highlight was the sea turtle that swam by me as I was floating along the reef. For me, that was a real treat!

The golf was excellent and the dining was pretty good too! I hit on both of these topics in other related posts though, so I won%26#39;t go into any additional detail here.

While in Lana%26#39;i, I played golf twice, and then spent most of the time just relaxing at the pool or beach. It can sometimes be difficult to get a prime spot at the pool, but there always seemed to be some space available. If not, the guys there will make space for you. They were great, as were Kris and Trey down at the beach.

We like to relax, but wanted some minor action as well. We did the hike to Sweetheart Rock with Joe West. This was great! Joe really knows his stuff and is a jack of all trades at the resort.

Other than that, we made two trips in to Lana%26#39;i City. We got some really nice gifts from Dis N Dat and Gifts with Aloha! We had lunch once at Cafe 565 and once at Pele%26#39;s Other Garden. Of course, we made a stop in the Mike Carroll Gallery. Mike wasn%26#39;t around, but we met his wife who was very nice and helpful. We walked out of there with 8 of his paintings, and can%26#39;t wait to get them framed and up on the walls of my home!!! Thanks for the beautiful work Mike!!

I%26#39;ve gone on long enough here. I%26#39;ll wrap up by simply stating that we loved Lana%26#39;i and the Four Seasons!! A special thanks goes out to Kiona, the concierge at Manele Bay. He was great at helping me plan this trip. Mahalo to you Kiona!!

Should anyone have any questions, please feel free to contact me at anytime. I%26#39;ll do my best to check out the boards often, and hopefully help out others as much as people like Dr. V and NatureCat helped me.

    Yeah for Lana%26#39;i!!!!

    Trip Report (Jan. 20-25)

Great report Scott! I%26#39;m glad you had a nice trip. I also have never received an upgrade at Manele Bay after 6 stays (3 since FS took over). Even when we were there a year ago for our 25th wedding aniversary we were lucky to get the room grade we paid for in the wing we requested. But we love the island and keep going back there. We will be back in December.

    Trip Report (Jan. 20-25)

Thanks for the report! I%26#39;m dreaming of Lanai%26#39;i....

Great report! Thanks for sharing your experience, and congratulations on your engagement!

    Scott,

Thanks for the great trip report. I say, the longer the better when you are describing a vacation to Lana%26#39;i!

    Questions for you...

Did Joe West take some photographs of you %26amp; your fiancee on the hike to Sweetheart Rock?

Did the turtle swim by you near the reef at Hulopo%26#39;e Bay?

    Comments...

Good call on sticking with the Starfish room. We LOVED our room on the 2nd floor of Starfish. Best bang for your buck in my opinion. We thought the view was fantastic and had a very private lanai.

Eight paintings from Mike Carroll Gallery - awesome! That will be a nice reminder of your lovely vacation.

Nice of you to compliment the staff at the Four Seasons. We%26#39;ve always found them to be very accomodating and friendly too.

I noticed your comment on the turtle sighting too. That is special. After 6 trips I have yet to see a turtle at Hulopo%26#39;e.

Sorry for the delay! Work is getting me down. Nothing picks me up like thinking of Lana%26#39;i.

Joe did not take any pictures of us, although I%26#39;m sure he would have had we asked. When we took the tour, he said his name was Joe. It didn%26#39;t compute that he was the same guy with the photography all over the island though. At the end of the tour, he gave us his card, and that was when we realized it.

As for the turtle, yeah, I think I just got lucky there. We were out on the reef. We were not real far out either, probably close to in line with the green staircase that leads to the tidal pools. We were just kinda floating on the surface, and all of the sudden, this huge turtle just swims right below us like he was on a Sunday stroll and we were just another couple of fish out and about. It was unreal.

Love the turtle story! Makes me happy to think about. We have only seen the turtles at Lopa Beach. There were lots feeding near the shorebreak the day we were there. It was a highlight of the trip. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Lost Tour on Oahu

Best tour we have ever taken. Our guide was Dave, who is a wealth of knowledge...not just of Lost information, but also of Hawaii. We took the full day tour and plan to take the half day tour on our next trip to Oahu. Also, the actual website is hawaiianescapades.com We booked through Big Khahuna, which is actual a booking group. They had good service, but next time we will book straight through hawaiianescapades instead. When the new 2008 episodes started this month, it was a whole new perspective. Great tour!!

    Lost Tour on Oahu

Sounds wonderful, but the tour operates only on WEd. and Sat...and we have neither of those two days available. We are going with another company that offers more days for their tour...sure hope it%26#39;s as good as yours was! Love the new episodes...still can%26#39;t figure out what%26#39;s next!!

    Puka-dogs

Yesterday on the Travel channel I saw a segment about Puka dogs(Hot-dogs) on Kauai. Does anyone know if they can be found on any of the other islands?

    Thanks.

    Puka-dogs

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Nope - Puka Dogs is located at the Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village here on Kaua%26#39;i and nowhere else.

There are a couple of looong threads on just this place -- pretty much you either love it or hate it! It is in my opinion - way overpriced.

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

    Puka-dogs

Funny to think they are still running that same ';Puka Dog'; segment over the past two years. For most folks, it is a one-time thing ';to do';. I know of no other location than Poipu.

According to their website there is one on Oahu.

    http://www.pukadog.com/

I guess I am one who loves them. Especially the bun!

    Go Blue :-(

    To the two Michiganians:

Whatcha do is this...get over to Hamtramck for good Polish sausage, slather it with a mix of mayo and pickled jalapeno slices, top with mango, pineapple or papaya jam, or combinations of same, and then lay it all to rest in a toasted thick French roll bun. Saves the airfare and comes close enough.

They are good but we would share the next time. The fresh squeezed lemonade is really good. I thought i heard they were opening on

    Oahu.

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

I hadn%26#39;t heard that this place opened up another store on O%26#39;ahu -- but here it is:

    Waikiki Town Center

    2301 Kuhio Avenue # 2

    HONOLULU/ OAHU / HAWAII 96815

    Phone: 808 924-7887

I guess if you will pay $6 or $7 for a hot dog here -- you%26#39;ll do the same on O%26#39;ahu -- plus there are tons more visitors -- I%26#39;m sure the owners see $$$$.

What I want to know if who the heck do they know at the Travel Channel that they keep that darn ';Hot Dog Paradise'; program running for years now? It has been at least 3-4 years now!

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Whatcha do is this...get over to Hamtramck for good Polish sausage,

LOL How do you know about Hamtramck?? best perogi%26#39;s around haahaa - gotta have that with your Polish Sausage here in Michigan - but do you prefer fresh or smoked that is the big question?

I just find the place unique (Puka Dog) I am not overly crazy about the sauces, but the dogs and buns are good. I will have to suggest to them in Feb. that they should look into selling perogi%26#39;s too - Hey maybe they can hire me, made plenty in my day. :)

The Travel Channel also keeps running for:

Hilton Turtle Bay (Hasn鈥檛 been a Hilton for a long time)

Flumin the Ditch (closed after last years big quake)

Henry Clay鈥檚 restaurant in The Hotel Lanai (Henry Clay sold it and it no longer carries his name)

I am sure there are others as their programs age.

Yes the Travel Channel does need some fresh, new Hawaii shows. I just had never seen the Puka Dog one. Amazing I missed it.

DH works in Hamtramck and sometimes brings home carry out from Polonia. Wonderful food. In Feb., he brings home Paczkis(sp)....so good!

How about a Puka Polish Dog??

Thanks for the info on the Oahu location.

I think puka dogs are great. I%26#39;ve only taken one person there who didn%26#39;t like them. As usual, it was the same thing I%26#39;ve heard here, that the sauces were too strong. If one thinks they%26#39;re overpriced, well just don%26#39;t go. I don%26#39;t think most travellers would find them overpriced though when you just compare it to the alternatives. The cost of restaurants and grocery ingredients to prepare a meal is more than this. And these dogs ARE the size of a meal almost. So I%26#39;d say , looking at it from a traveller%26#39;s perspective, not a bad deal at all.

  • Big Island vs. Maui

6 days with 2 teenage girls and mom and dad. What is the best location for activites + beautiful scenery and best sandy beaches?

    Big Island vs. Maui

The two teenage girls part of your post makes me say you%26#39;ll want Maui. The six days part, too. Big Island is B-I-G, with few beaches, little choice of lodgings outside of the NW sector, and almost no shopping. You%26#39;ll spend a lot of time in the car, driving to see all of Big Island. If you are interested in the volcano...right now there is so much VOG that people are not allowed out of their cars on part of the volcano park road.

Maui is small, tropical, lots of beaches, shopping, widest choice of lodgings outside of Honolulu. I%26#39;d choose West Maui with the teens over quieter South Maui. Do you want hotel or condo?

    Big Island vs. Maui

Given the time and travel party, I agree... Maui sounds like your better choice. The Big Island is more of a two week type of trip, and for folks who don%26#39;t mind the extra driving (and who love the diversity).

Thanks for your help. By the way, what is VOG? Just found out plans have already been made. Any nice beaches on Hawai%26#39;i?

Hop over to the ';Island of Hawaii'; forum and ask away!

    NCL Wind Hawaian Cruise

I am leaving for a 10 day Hawaian cruise on the Norwegian Wind in a few weeks. We have never been to Hawaii and are looking forward to our trip. The problem: I have read so many BAD reviews on the NCL Wind after booking our trip. We got the cruise at a really inexpensive price and have sailed on NCL, Princess and Holland American. I am expecting a ';budget'; cruise for the price I paid, but I am hoping for a still hoping for a good cruise and enjoying the Islands. The majority of the reviews I have read are not good, I am hoping to find someone whose expectations were reasonable for the price paid, to say they had a good trip. Is any one out there? I need some reassurance!

    NCL Wind Hawaian Cruise

I am also leaving on April 4th for the NCL Wind cruise. I would like to hear the same. We have upgraded to Conceirge Service with a balcony room and would like to hear what we can expect from the Conceirge. Also what excursions should we book through NCL and what should we do on our own?

    NCL Wind Hawaian Cruise

Update to our January 2007 Norwegian Wind Cruise - Fortunately we had had a good experience on the Wind. A coworker went on the Wind a few weeks ago and had a poor experience, cold food, bad servcie, etc. We found the ship clean and well kept, service was very good. Skip the buffet, the area is cramped and dull. Food is mediocer. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining rooms and were very satisfied. The two specialty resturants were very good. You do need to make reservations early in the cruise for the two specialty resturants, they fill up fast. You will find you will have to wait sometimes for a table for lunch and dinner in the regular resturant, 10 - 20 minutes, just be patient. No sense in getting stressed. You are on vacation. I can%26#39;t answer any questions about Conceirge service, I%26#39;m not sure what it is. We had booked an outside oceanview room, for $399 per person. Very satisified with the price we paid! $40 a day for room, food, entertainment, and Hawaii, can%26#39;t be beat!

We booked most of our excursions through NCL, but wish we hadn%26#39;t . Roberts Hawaii offers the same excursions for $49 per person, half the price! We did take two Roberts excursions and were very satisfied. I believe their web site is gorabbitgo.com, or do search for Roberts Hawaii to find out more info.

Fanning Island is unique. I don%26#39; think I would do this port again - 2 days there, 2 days back, but it was a once in a life time experience. Not much to do there unless you like the beach. If you do like the beach, book the NCL shore excursion for the private beach. It was beautiful and uncrowded. Plus you are the first to tender off the ship. Was well worth the $25 per person charge. There is a straw market by the natives, with crafts they make. Very interesting. Good place to by souveniers. The prices are very cheap.

If I had paid alot for this cruise, my review may have been different. But for the price we paid, we were very satisfied. Hawaii is beautiful.

    Hope this is helpful.

where did you book/find the norwegian wind cruise? I%26#39;ve been looking lately and never found any hawaii cruises under about $999! I saw alot last year for even $599 but it doesn%26#39;t seem possible now unless we cruise there from Mexico or CA which we definitely don%26#39;t want. I just want a week of cruising the hawaiian islands, fly there and fly back. Any help greatly appreciated! I%26#39;m flexible anytime from May till whenever.

Northshore Big Isand & East side of Maui

Hi, going to big island and maui for first time this July. Trying to find inexpensive cottage/rental. Does anyone have suggestions? On the Big Island I have a place in the south and looking for one in the north.. with Maui I have one in Kihei and looking for place in the east..trying to do opposite sides of each island spending 5 days in each place...I feel like Ive been to all sites but would like some advise / suggestions / Help from some one who has experience with the islands..thanks...

Northshore Big Isand %26amp; East side of Maui

well, you need to define ';north'; on the Big Island, because that could include a whole bunch of communities, from Hawi to Honomu, and that%26#39;s more than a two hour drive in separation. More specificity about what you%26#39;re seeking in the way of proximity?

Northshore Big Isand %26amp; East side of Maui

well, East Maui means Hana....and that means some of the highest prices in Maui

Hawi area is not in any way a visitor area. I think there is one little inn...but I know no cottages for rent....its all farms and ranches

I hope you understand that by staying in the north and south will put you hours of driving from anything and in the two rainiest areas totaly devoid of beaches, snorkeling, and services

What is it that you think you will accomplish with these areas....that is what do you see yourself doing there? That is important for us to understand

Yeah, ';north'; and ';south'; don%26#39;t make much sense on the Big Island. East and West makes more sense if you%26#39;re trying to get a ';feel'; for the different sides of the island. You need to do more research.

Thanks for the replies.. Big Island %26amp; Maui..just looking for non touristy areas..I dont mind driving to get to some beaches. Most important is to stay away from the tourist crowds/groups etc.

understand Hana is expensive guess i ment more north of hana. I picked those areas because they are away from the main areas everyone goes to..also read about some of the sites like green beach in southern area of the Big Island. the northern part of the big island is still up in the air.. in any case i would like to keep my driving time to any beach under 2hours..I enjoy the sites as i get to any location - just looking for a nice place with some privacy, abiltity to do some bbqing and kick back.. thanks again...

north of Hana....its pretty wet..called the ocean.

Understand that the entire south coast of the Big island has no beaches... the green sand is for looking at after a long dusty and windy hike..

trying to swim anywhere alont that or the entire east or northern coast is very dangerous with nasty currents andrips....no sand.

Hawi...has one inn.. and 2 places to eat.Beach will be about 1 hour drive each way and Kona about 2 hours each way

. If staying in the south it will be a 2 hour each way drive to a beach, restauraunts, grocery,

Maybe you are thinking of the Haiku area on Maui?

On the Big Island, you could look at either Hawi and points east to Makapala near Pololu, or you could look at Honoka`a where there are 1 or 1 B%26amp;B%26#39;s ... check the reviews here and see if one appeals to you?

Honoka%26#39;a is 45-60 min to a beach, same with North Kohala, maybe a little less. Take a look at www.alternative-hawaii for cottages and B%26amp;B%26#39;s and alternative rentals.

Let us know what you find, if you would ...

Yep Haiku sounds right in Maui..will check around there..already got a place in Naalehu and considering a place in kohala coast close to Kawaihae. totally appreciate tips and info thanks.. will definetly check out those websites...thanks..

Actually, there are a lot of positives in choosing a North/South split, but the point about the distances in the north is worth considering. Ka`u actually works really well for folks that want a single base for exploring Volcano or South Kona. Each is about 45 min away in very light traffic. The north spreads those distances out a little bit more and staying central might be helpful. If you are here long enough, a three point strategy might be worth considering.

My best time ever...was 1:38 min from Kau....and 1:05 from Ocean View.. its like a 70 mile drive on 50 to 35 mph roads .... from the south of Kona at Keauhou.........there is a district however called south Kona that is about 20 min drive south of keauhou.....

Kau region is great for the volcano however....

Just to clarify, HawaiiDan is correct. The drive to Kailua-Kona is about One hour and 10 minutes from Na%26#39;alehu. For me, South Kona has always been Kealakekua south, although Honalo is still up ma uka and is sort of the great divide for South Kona families.
