Drive times

Hi all,

I have only 1 month until I am on the Island (whohoo!!!)

I am staying at the Mariott in Lihue am hiring a car and wanted to know how long it takes to drive to both the North and South Coast from Lihue

Also is it easier to get to places in 4wd jeep or will a normal car be fine?

thanks for your help

Drive times

It depends on the time of day. At 4-ish in the evening it took me 45 minutes from the Lihue airport (Mariott is near) to get to Waimea (south west side of island). It is two lane highway and everybody owns a car.

Drive times

It really depends on the time of day and if you hit traffic but on general:

Kapaa - 20 minutes

Poipu - 30 minutes

North Shore - 45 minutes (add more time for driving past Hanalei out to end of the road at Ke%26#39;e Beach due to all the one lane bridges)

Waimea - 45 minutes plus a bit more to get to the Canyon.

I hope you like the Marriott, that is where we always stay. Have a great trip.

';Normal car'; just fine for routine roadway travel.

THis gives you any drive times from point A to point B anywhere on the island!!!

We rented a convertible and it has been great. The roads we have so far encountered have been in great shape. Really no need for a 4WD. The top of a convertible also comes up a lot quicker than the hardtop of a jeep, especially when rain comes on quickly.
