A couple of people had read my review of the Hyatt Regency and then contacted me to suggest I post it as a trip report in the forums. My apologies if this ends up being repetitive for some of you!
My fiancee and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui for 2 nights before moving on to Lana%26#39;i for the remainder of our trip. I booked the room using points. At the time I booked, standard/garden view rooms were going for $388 with a AAA rate. I figured we would probably get something generic since we were not actually paying for the room. I was pleasantly surprised though at check-in. We received a very nice upgrade to a partial oceanview on the top floor of the Napili tower. The room was fantastic and the view was even better. We were really blown away here, as we really had a great view of the ocean.
The grounds of the resort are very nicely manicured. The African cranes, penguins, and parrots were really cool too. My favorite was ';Roger';, who would say Hello as you walked by. If you walked by with luggage, he would say Goodbye and wave his foot. This was really something!
The pool was very nice and the water was warm. It was somewhat crowded on one day we were there, but the hotel staff seemed to do a pretty good job of making sure people did not save seats for the entire day. Other than this one time, we never had a problem getting choice seats.
We did play golf at the Ka%26#39;anapali Golf Resort. It is right across the street and there is a free shuttle from the Hyatt. Note that in the packet of brochures you receive at check-in, there is a golf brochure with a COUPON for either 20% off of Merchandise in the pro shop or a Free Club Rental. My fiancee brought her clubs and played here just once. I also spent about $100 in the pro shop. Of course, I didn%26#39;t notice the coupon til after we got back to the room after our round, so I lost out. Don%26#39;t make the same mistake I made!!!
We went to the Drums of the Pacific Luau on the resort property. It was a great show and I highly recommend it, especially if you are staying at the resort! The food was average. I had heard the luau at Old Lahaina Luau was great, but this was more convenient for us, especially since we did not have a car. Definitely no regrets on this though.
In terms of breakfast, we did not have the buffet package. We figured we would still try it out once though. For the two of us, it came to about $70 with tax and tip. It%26#39;s not bad for free, but I have been to many buffets that have been much better. The views are great! It%26#39;s worth at least one trip to check it out, especially if you are really hungry. That is about it though. For our other breakfast, we just ate at the Weeping Banyan Cafe. That was $18 for the two of us, and just as good, considering we really are not big on breakfast.
Normally, I would expect a Hyatt brand resort or hotel to check in with 4 stars. If I am honest though, I have to admit that I really cannot find any reason not to give them 5 Stars! Pretty much everything was perfect. The only negative was that we had signed up for the Couples Tour of the Stars with the Champagne and Chocolate Covered Strawberries. On the night we were scheduled, it was very windy and cloudy, and the tour had to be cancelled. There is not much the hotel can do about weather though!
All in all, we had a great stay at the Hyatt and wish we could have stayed longer! We%26#39;d go back there in a heartbeat and would recommend it to everyone!!
Kudos to the Hyatt Regency Maui!!!

just my opinion but since the golf course was across the street i would have gone back with my receipt and coupon -- bet they would have refunded you the 20 bucks
This is from the Hyatt%26#39;s web site. We did it on our honeymoon and it was amazing! It was the high light of our trip.
Tour of the Stars
A Cosmic Experience!
Experience the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa%26#39;s very own rooftop astronomy program!
More than 1,000 years ago, voyaging Polynesians were guided to the Hawaiian Islands with the help of the stars. Now you can view those stars and much more using Hawaii%26#39;s only recreational telescope, ';Great White';. This 16-inch reflector telescope sits more than nine stories up, on a remote site of the hotel rooftop. Our Director of Astronomy uses a computer to select an agenda, locate and identify 1,000 objects in the sky including stars, planet, galaxies and nebulae. Participants first learn to interpret the sky with the unaided eye, then with giant astronomy binoculars, and ultimately with %26#39;Great White';.
