surf lessons for kids on Kauai in March, 2008

I will be on Kauai in March with my Grandkids 11 and 14 and two other kids. I know they will want to at least try surfing, any suggestions for renting boards, a good beach to learn...Thanks in advance. I may even want to try!

What part of the island are you staying on?

Good for you for wanting to learn as well. The Grandkids will get a kick out that.

Probably the most well known (read: publicized) surfing lesson operation is the surfing school that is right at Kiahuna Beach in front of Kiahuna Plantation on the south shore.

However........I would not personally recommend it and suggest you research once you get there some more. There are many advertisements in the flyers and magazines you can pick up at the airport. Also, right in the phone book yellow pages.

The lessons given at Kiahuna are really dumbed down in my opinion. Too many students, the spot they use is marginal for surfing and just baby waves very close to shore. Plus it can be rocky there. They don%26#39;t present much of a challenge to be honest.

On the north shore at Hanalei Bay is the Titus Kinimaka School of Surfing. I would really suggest you check out this operation. Much more personalized, small group, if not private, and that beautiful Hanalei Bay in the background. They won%26#39;t take the kids out unless the conditions are good and safe and they always know the best place along Hanalei Bay that day. But do check local ads and flyers for individuals listing private lessons too. My daughter took private lessons a few times from a fellow named Cliff (last name =??) who was a lifeguard on Waikiki. She had a great time and we hooked up with him on more than a few visits. We%26#39;d meet him at whatever location he thought had the best conditions that day, throughout the island. It combined some sightseeing for us too.

Thank You all for your help. The kids are very athletic, so I prefer them being challenged. I will check it out. Thanks Again!! Wish me luck!

We are staying on the south side, but plan on taking trips to the north shore for the hiking, sightseeing ect....

In March your best option should be Poipu. The waters might be a bit rough on the North Shore. My kids were able to surf this past Dec in Hanalei but only near the pier. Their favorite spot, Grandpas, was too rough for them.

Another place to learn is the bay next to the Marriott in Lihue. I bet Denny knows a surf company there. That might a fun day. Take surf lessons and then have lunch at Dukes.

That sounds like a great idea! Thanks again. I have one more question. Can anyone recommend a hike where there might be some mild cliff jumping for the kids? Thanks.
