Description:

Recognized as one of the most famous volcanic craters, Diamond Head is certainly the island%26#39;s most famous landmark. The 760-foot tall crater lies at the end of Waikiki and serves as a recognizable backdrop to the Honolulu skyline. British sailors are credited with naming the volcano after noticing that the rocks sparkled and mistook what are actually calcite crystals for diamonds. Diamond Head, which is part of the Honolulu Volcanic Series of eruptions, is about 200,000 years old and is said to have been extinct for 150,000 years. Today, it%26#39;s a popular hiking destination with some paved trails, a tunnel, and an observation deck.

As long as you get there early enough, one morning is plenty of time. However, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend walking there. It%26#39;s an uphill walk from Waikiki, and once you get to the entrance it%26#39;s still another 1/4 (1/2?) mile to the trail head. Also, there is almost no shade on the trail, so that tires you out, too.

Diamond Head question...

Great! Thanks for info.

If it gets crowded and you run into someone like me (I%26#39;m terrified of heights but walked the entire trail) it could take a long time so start early. (the trail gets backed up in a few places where it%26#39;s basically ';single file';). I was more afraid on the trip down since water run-off made the rocks kind of slimey and very slippery, and the areas that weren%26#39;t slimey seemed to have a lot of loose rock. It perplexed me to see women, mostly foreign tourists, walking up in near-stilettos. (What%26#39;s up with that?) They slowed things down, too.

Go as early as possible (8ish if you can) or later on in the afternoon as once the sun peaks the hike becomes a lot more difficult. Take plenty of water.

And take some decent footwear - it was quite comical watching people struggling up wearing flipflops / high heels.

How does it get at about 4pm? We wouldnt be able to go in the am.

I%26#39;ve seen posts on here that they don%26#39;t allow people to start their hike after 3:30. But if you get there by 4pm, just tell them that you are avid hikers %26amp; it won%26#39;t take you long. Then they%26#39;ll let you go.
