Tour info on Mauna Kea

All of the tour company info I%26#39;ve found for Mauna Kea is for ~8 hours round trip, and ~$180 or so. Are there any guides / companies that do a shorter trip, and just go to the visitors center?

very quickly....NO. it takes that long to drive there and back.....due to poor roads and altitude wven to the visitor center.. an 8 hour trip envolves 5 hours of just driving. if you saw even the paved hiway you would understand

You don%26#39;t need a tour to go to the Visitor%26#39;s Center. The road is paved if you drive up from the Hilo side. But you do need to check with your rental car company that you%26#39;re covered for liability on that stretch of the road.

Once you get to the VC, they have a program there, and will act as your guides, for free.

Here%26#39;s the official website, NOT ad copy produced by a tour company, but rather the info from University of Hawai`i%26#39;s site.

It tells you everything you need to know and when they have programs.

LOL at their warning that NO CLOTHES can be rented at the VC.

My DH went up there once in shorts, Tshirt, and slippers and he would have LOVED to rent something warm to wear, I%26#39;m sure.
