where to stay

I know this is way ahead of time but I%26#39;ve seen on this forum the best side of the island for what time of year. We are tentatively planning a trip a year from May about the 1st or 2nd week of May 2009. Which part of the island would be the best for that time of year? Thanks for your replies.

where to stay

I believe the weather is good all over the island in May - no winter storms or anything. But we all have our preference - I would always choose the North shore and some folks would always choose Poipu. Kind of depends what you are looking for - since you are from Seattle, maybe you want a break from green/wet - if you want it sunnier/drier, I would pick the South shore. I do know that by May the waters on the Northshore have calmed down for swimming and snorkeling, if that is the more specific information you were looking for. Good luck! :)

where to stay

May is a good month, indeed, on any part of the island. It is also a popular wedding and honeymoon time so you are smart to do your planning early if you want to secure the nicest place to stay.

Thanks for your replies. I always plan way ahead of time, thats half the fun:%26lt;) Anyhow, my DIL is getting all of us a time share on Maui for 1 week, then DH and I will be flying over to Kauai for about 6 days. the rest will be going home. The day and a half we spent on Kauai with the cruise we knew we wanted to come back and spend some time. Checking the flights I found that May was one of the best prices too. In the summer they are almost twice the price. I am interested in snorkeling. I snorkeled on Kona this last Jan. and loved it. We stayed in a condo and liked that too. So, we would like a condo on Kauai. I%26#39;d rather fix my own meals to save money and spend it on a tour or something else. Hope that helps.

If you like to snorkel, then the north shore is the place to be in May. When we were there last May/June, we snorkeled almost every day somewhere on the north shore. Some of our favorite beaches to snorkel include Sealodge, Hideaways, Kepuhi, Tunnels and Ke%26#39;e.

All the north shore condos are in Princeville. You can check this site for aerial photos and reviews:

You might also check out renting a cottage or house. Check sites like vrbo.com, Summit Pacific and Kauai Vacation Rentals for both condos and cottages/houses. If you go the condo route, try to rent from an individual owner since that is the only way to make sure you get a specific unit and the quality of the units tends to vary greatly within each complex.

thanks you guys. I think the north side is the place to be. I checked out the web site DesertBeach and I think SeaLodge seems like a nice place to stay and fairly reasonable. Has anyone stayed there and what do you think of it. thanks

Sealodge units varies widely. The outside is very worn looking and not Hawaiian IMO(more like a New England condo) but some units do have great views. Sealodge is reasonable. I think I saw a nice one for rent by owner on summitpacific.com. You%26#39;ll love the North Shore I am sure. Bali Hai is calling......

Boy I just checked out the reviews of this SeaLodge and they were horrible. I don%26#39;t think I want to stay here. I%26#39;ll keep looking though. Any advice??

Kapaa sands on the east side has some good reviews. I%26#39;ll keep looking for a north shore condo.. Thanks

summitpacific has many units to choose from on the NS. Start there.

Two condo resorts I%26#39;ve enjoyed are the newer and luxurious Waipouli Beach Resort (rock waterslides into lazy river pool with waterfall, sandy bottom hot-tubs and kiddie beach at pool) and refurbished Kauai Coast Resort (behind Coconut Marketplace) in Kapa%26#39;a (east shore). You can search on-line for info and images of both (my photo albums are at webshots.com).

They are both excellent resorts with their own pluses (beachfront, nice grounds and well furnished)and minuses (strollable but often rough un-swimmable beaches) and are centrally located to explore via rental car the beaches and sights of both the north and south shores, about 35-50 mins. drive either way (just try to avoid morning and late afternoon rush hours, as traffic in Kapa%26#39;a can get Very Slow then).

Enjoy your trip to paradise... Aloha.

Plantation at Princeville is nice. No view...but very nice nearly new complex. All have air conditioning too! In fact, we are staying there in May of 09! Here is a link to some of the best rates, but look on vrbo too!
